1997 Cadillac Seville STS 4.6 liter

Summary:

An over priced car that has more than average rate of costly repairs

Faults:

Air conditioner pump clogged and failed at 38,000 miles.

Rear passenger side door panel came off it's mounting brackets.

Leather trim on passenger side door separated from door frame.

Window trim on driver side door came loose due to poor design.

Oil inter cooler line came loose at 24,500 miles.

Oil manifold started leaking at 42,000 miles and Cadillac refused to fix it. Now is major item for repair at over 2,500 dollars.

Seat memory does not work. Seats adjust themselves on startup and never return to the original set point.

Numerous interior rattles on column lever for wipers.

Intermittent fault on the windshield wiper switch where wipers will not work on the mist function setting.

Front air damper rattles loudly.

Alternator voltage control module failed three times.

Difficulty in starting based upon easily fouled throttle body.

General Comments:

This car is very quick, but has undersized brakes that fade quickly under heavy use.

Back seat leg room is tight.

Ingres and egress into back seat is difficult if you are not a midget.

Cadillac is trying to keep up with the European markets and also trying to attract a younger audience. I am 38 and broke the 66 years and older demographic trend. Older is not wiser.

Fit and finish is lacking. The motor is the best thing on this car.

1997 Cadillac Seville STS Northstar

Summary:

I'm worried about the long term effects of high oil consumption on the engine and exhaust systems

Faults:

This car burns a quart of oil every thousand miles! The dealerships and Cadillac Customer Service claim that this is all within normal usage. I don't believe that G.M. built this engine with this rather loose spec as a standard. Is anyone else out there having this experience? Has Cadillac responded the same way?

General Comments:

I like the style and performance of the car in general. Having had two Mercedes Benz prior to this, I think that Cadillac has come very close and kept the cost quite reasonable by comparison.. I do find that I have very little space to put any little personal things like papers, glasses, snacks, etc., while operating the car.

I have recently purchased a 97 STS and am enjoying it very much. However I too have heard of the high oil burn on that engine, especially that year. The one I purchased had the same problem described by another review, burning a quart every 1k of miles. This was documented and found by cadillac to be a defect from the factory and I got a new NorthStar put in the car just before going out of factory warranty. I had the best car dealer experience and best service experience in my life at this particular dealership. I highly recomend this model.
