1996 Chevrolet Blazer LS 3.1 V6

Summary:

Less than perfect vehicle

Faults:

Serpentine belt has been squeaky since vehicle was purchased. Has not caused any problems, it is just annoying.

Loud clunking noise from the front right of vehicle. Dealership had the car for 2 weeks and could not define the problem. Still hasn't been fixed, but hasn't caused any noticeable problems.

Vehicle starts hard, always has, but has never failed to start, most likely a compression problem.

Pitman arm replaced at 107,000 again at 113,500 and yet again at 134,000.

Idler arm replaced at 110,000 and again at 134,000.

Electronic ABS engage uneccessarily ever since they were supposedly fixed at 108,000. They are far too sensitive now.

Rear axle and rear seals replaced at 123,000. I installed a used axle so it was not as expensive.

Oxygen censor and catalytic converter replaced at 117,500.

Front upper and lower ball joints have been a constant problem and have both been replaced two times since I have owned the vehicle.

Intake Gaskets leak slowly, I have not replaced them yet, but will need to before this summer because I will need the car for long trips.

Brakes are not set up correctly for this vehicle, way too much pressure on the front brakes. When friends drive this car they always notice how hard it is to stop this vehicle compared to their own.

General Comments:

It may be that I just got a bad used car, but I have spent almost as much in repairs as I did to purchase the Blazer.

It seems the truck cannot run more than a few months without something breaking.

It is a comfortable ride and has quite a bit of power for a small SUV.

I wish I would have kept my Corsica which got better gas mileage and also was easier to work on.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer LS 4.3 V6

Summary:

I would buy another used one again any day of the week

Faults:

The heater motor/blower stopped working at 155000 miles.

The intake gasket started taking in antifreeze at 155000 miles.

The drivers seat is starting to get small holes around the seams.

General Comments:

Considering the mileage and use of this vehicle, it is great.

The dash lights can leave a lot to be desired.

All problems are handled cheaply and accurately by a local mechanic, not the dealers.

1996 Chevrolet Blazer S-10

Summary:

Convinces me to never buy another GM

Faults:

Fuel pump (have to drop the gas tank to replace)

Transmission (some value between the transfer case and the torque converter)

Air conditioning.

Water pump (Most fans are bolted to the water pump. Smart GM decides bolt it AND screw it on. So you have to have a "special" tool to remove it)

Radiator.

Leather seat cover (The seat hardware wears through the leather)

Brakes (learn to replace them your self. This car likes to eat them)

Air Bag.

I'm sure there are plenty more.

General Comments:

I originally bought this car in hopes that it would last me for a very long time. Was I wrong. This car has become a money pit. Every year it has become more and more expensive to maintain. Love the car WHEN it works. It's not too big, but have a lot of room. What good is that when it's sitting DOA in my driveway. It has become a very unreliable vehicle. I use to have a '84 Nissan that was better engineered, more reliable and I was much harder on it. Plus had a lot more miles on it when it died. I'm really disappointed in this car.

I totally agree. Our 1996 Chevy Blazer has given us nothing but problems! There have been so many problems with this vehicle and has cost us several thousand dollars for repairs. This vehicle is junk and I would NEVER buy another Chevy!!!

I purchased this vehicle from a G.M. dealer with less than 60,000 miles on the odometer, and opted for the extended warranty. Lucky I did!.Within the first month the water pump was leaking and the ABS light was on, as well as the intake manifold gasket had to be replaced. Shortly after the tailgate lock mechanism went south. Since the extended warranty expired I have replaced almost everything except the motor and transmission. i. e ball joints, front end parts, u joints, rear diff, serpentine belt pulleys, air conditioning, brakes, brake booster, alternator, etc., etc. Absolutely the worst vehicle I have ever had the misfortune to own. At the time I write this the air bag code comes on intermittently and the transmission is shifting hard. Good bye Blazer!

The water pump and transmission came up in some other S10 reviews, too. Hadn’t seen the AC mentioned though. Do you live in a hot climate?
