1998 Chevrolet Blazer LT 256

Summary:

Check into newer blazers

Faults:

Fuel Filter went out at 83,000. Cost a lot for replacement ($700). Now have fuel pressure problems, check engine light comes on from pressure leak in system that everyone says it is a lose fuel cap.

Oil line blew while on freeway. New engine at 90,000 miles.

General Comments:

Enjoy truck. Works well in snow or dry weather.

Has lots of power and is small enough to get through tight areas.

Seems to have a lot of road noise.

Votech engines are new this year and they did not work out all the bugs.

This vehicle is a home mechanics best friend.

If you are not mechanically inclined you would be better off buying another style of car.

Wheel bearings and ball joints at 50,000 miles? Sounds to me like you're not even trying to avoid any bumps or potholes cause I have the same truck as you and I got 115,000 miles out of mine!

Try changing to heavy duty, lifetime guaranteed shock absorbers. My 98 Blazer needed ball joints replaced twice in 4 months. My mechanic recommended the shock absorber change. I've put 40K miles on it since then with no more front end problems.

1998 Chevrolet Blazer 4x4 4.3L V6

Summary:

Junk engineered, executed poorly

Faults:

Let me start with the door hinge that broke when the truck was just 6 months old.

Then the power mirror motor broke soon after.

Power steering pump blew at 12,000 miles.

Power window mirror (left rear) ceased to operate at 14,500 miles.

Dome lights cut out on me (none of them work).

Brake lights stopped working.

This was the big one: Battery and alternator at the same time. 25,000 miles. Very expensive.

The seats are really uncomfortable.

I don't know who designed this P.O.S., but they should be fired.

General Comments:

This has to be the biggest piece of junk since the Pinto. I cannot believe they sell these things they way they are built and designed. They handle poorly, don't hold up, and basically eat up all of your time and money. Also do not like they way I was treated at the dealership. What a headache.

1998 Chevrolet Blazer LT 4.3 Vortec

Summary:

A good small to medium SUV

Faults:

I have done nothing to this car except replace the tires at 72,000 miles and the spark plugs at 62,000 miles. I ran over a piece of steel (while out of the country) and an identical Michelin tire was not available, so I bought an entire new matching set. The old 100,000 mile platinum spark plugs were fine when I removed them, but since I already bought new ones, I replaced them anyway.

General Comments:

The handling, ride, and interior noise is good. The right front passenger could use a little more leg room. My wife has a 99 GMC Jimmy with 24,000 miles that is supposedly the same vehicle. The ride on hers is slightly softer and quieter.

I occasionally tow a 11,000 GVW trailer and John Deere tractor and have no problems. 11,000 GVW way more than this vehicle is rated for. I also tow 2 jet skis on a trailer and you do not even know they are there.
