1979 Chevrolet C10 Scottsdale 4.1 I6

Summary:

A great work truck that is very reliable

Faults:

Engine died at 130,000 miles so the engine was rebuilt.

Very rusty and needs new bed.

A tire blew, but from a nail on the road.

General Comments:

It may not be the fastest, but it's very reliable and gets from A to B.

The truck only gets sixteen miles per gallon, but I don't drive much so it doesn't really matter.

We have had this for over ten years and it still runs very well.

I have owned my 1979 Scottsdale step side since 1980. Best buy I have ever made.

I have driven all over the West Coast with no major problems. Rebuilt the engine 2 times, only because I wanted to keep up the power. I parked the truck for 10 years and brought it out last year. While making the routine repairs, I now drive it almost every day. I am trying to keep it as stock as possible, and people continue to stop and talk to me about my truck.

1979 Chevrolet C10 Camper 7.4L 454

Summary:

Reliable American power

Faults:

Nothing. The ruck has been perfect since the day I got it.

A little rust is starting to develop since I have it in a rainy part of the country now. It is all concealed under the vehicle however.

General Comments:

This truck is a beast. It is a half-ton very light truck. It came from the factory with a TH400 tranny and a 454 V8. I am going to put in a posi rear-end and some "sport" orientated street tires and have it as a hot rod. This thing is just too fast and has too much torque to use it as a work truck. The pull from 50 up is AMAZING.

What about MPG?

The truck has a 454 engine. Asking about gas mileage is a pointless question.

1979 Chevrolet C10 Custom Deluxe was 250 I6, now 305 V8

Summary:

It just keeps going

Faults:

Heater fan motor at 120,000 miles.

Clutch at 135,000 miles.

Radiator at 139,500.

Engine at 140,000 miles (my fault) .

Rusting body panels.

General Comments:

This truck is a base model with almost no extra options. It was originally a 250 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder with a 3 speed manual transmission. I bought it in 1991 for $1000 from my grandfather, who had owned it for 4 or 5 years before that. It has taken me where ever I've needed to go for the last 10 years. This has been literally the best vehicle I could have possibly owned.

The original engine was extremely reliable. It never once refused to start. This even during the 50 degrees below zero temperatures of a South Dakota winter, without the block heater plugged in. It got good gas mileage for a full sized pickup and had plenty of power for light pulling and hauling.

Unfortunately it died a couple years ago after the radiator sprung a leak and drained of all coolant on a trip. The engine was extremely over heated and I did not notice because of a lack of gauges, but it did not give out just yet. I replaced the radiator and drove it for about two more weeks before it finally broke a piston which I assume was caused by the overheating. Being a stupid kid, I opted for installing a V8 instead of rebuilding the I6. The V8 has gotten me by for now. The truck now has well over 150,000 miles on it, but I cannot be sure of the exact number because of the incorrectly sized tires that had been used for years.

It was horrendously neglected by myself, and still keeps going. My only complaint is the body rust. Other than that, it is a great truck. Parts are very cheap and readily available. I highly recommend one.
