1977 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 305 c.i. V8 Gasoline
Summary:
A solid, dependable friend
Faults:
The water pump failed the first week after I acquired the car. For under $50, I replaced the pump, belts and renewed the coolant. I have, over the past four years, fitted a new fuel pump, radiator and hoses, brake shoes and pads, brake fluid replaced, transmission rear mount, shock absorbers and wishbone bushes at the front. The car has been 99% reliable.
The one time it let me down was due to an unexpected battery failure. I service the car myself, changing the oil and filter every 3000 miles. Number four spark plug fouls up after about 3000 miles as the engine is starting to show it's age and miles.
General Comments:
I had the interior professionally reupholstered last year, new headlining, carpeting and seat fabric.
The bench seat is adjustable for reach only, but quite comfortable on a long run. The center armrest is just at the right height for me. Gages are in short supply, warning lights being fitted as standard. I've added a voltmeter and coolant temperature gage.
The next item will be an oil pressure gauge. These cars are, in my opinion, the best that Chevrolet ever made. I would buy a new one today if they were still made.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I have one of these cars, albeit a station wagon, in Pakistan, and for a car which has been heavily modified by its previous owner, it hasn't lost much of its character.
It has a 3000 cc Diesel engine instead of the original V-8, which makes the car accelerate like a tractor. This is the only unforgivable anomaly in the car. otherwise the car is in its original upholstery and all the knobs/switches still work. The power windows wound at the same rate as a brand new car, and the suspension gives you a dream ride. I believe the suspension of this car is the major contributor to its likability quotient.
I desperately need some parts for the car to keep it in running condition and would be grateful if anyone can help me out. My email address is yassarkhattak@hotmail.com.
