1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 5.0L V8

Summary:

A roomy and powerful family car

Faults:

* Inside Hood Release. Repair shop couldn't fix it. I removed the cable & associated parts and installed hood pins (<$20). They're much simpler, faster, etc.

* Tape player started eating tapes 18 months ago. I'm planning to replace it with another tape player & kit for $60.

* Fuel Pump ($400 for parts & labor; 1 month ago)

* Starter (replacing today)

* Replaced the standard Champion spark plugs (unknown age) with Bosch +2s and had a significant improvement in performance and fuel mileage.

* There is much carpet wear, but that's to be expected after so many miles.

* There is a front alignment problem that's not fixable without excess parts replacement. It's cheaper to replace the tires every 6 months as they wear out than to spend the thousands to get it fixed. I doubt the car will last another 5 years.

General Comments:

This car has been used for everything from its initial purchase by my wife's elderly grandparents to its sale to my in-laws to its presentation to us.

Even in the last few months, when everything seems to be going wrong, it's overall condition must still be considered to be quite well for its age and excellently reliable for its lifetime. I'm more confident in driving it from Denver to Miami than to the corner store.

Lots of play in the body, esp on turns, but it's quite smooth riding.

Fuel mileage is usually ~20mpg on 85 octane.

Perhaps this person should go to a better repair shop, maybe even the dealer. There was a factory recall on the hood release; this repair is covered by GM. As for replacing tires every six months being cheaper than fixing the front end, where is this individual getting his car serviced?

Sheesh!

1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 5.0 liter gas

Summary:

A great all around full size car

Faults:

Ignition switch gets stuck in the lock position; water pump failed; catalytic converter got plugged.

General Comments:

The motor isn't fantastically powerful, but it works for me. I've had a 1992 caprice, and this 1991, and they are great heavy duty, reliable cars. I get 20 miles a gallon consistently. I drove this car from Ohio to California fully loaded with no problems. It's the perfect affordable full size luxury car that is still practical transportation.

1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic 305

Faults:

No real faults so far. Had to replace radiator valve and tires. Person before me did not take good care of it. Is in still great conditon as my first car.

General Comments:

I'm in love with my car. It is the finest thing I have driven. It handles like a dream, and I have 205/16s on there right now. I will be upgrading to the 255/17 in the next few weeks. The acceleration is wonderful. I blow other "sports cars" out of the water. The higher gear ratio wont let me get off the line as fast. But once it kicks into second gear, the caprice will overtake just about any little punks turbo charged civic. The gas mileage is very impressive as well. Ive gotten up to 25 gallons to the mile if I don't drive it that hard for the 3 weeks or so. Overall, I would definitely suggest this wonderful car to anyone that asks about it. Also, the interior of the red corduroy and velvet is the best.

1991 Chevrolet Caprice Base 5.0 V8

Summary:

Maybe a lemon?

Faults:

Um, where to begin. transmission at 114k, horn, cruise, radiator, radiator, radiator, egr valve, egr valve again, 2 converters in 9 months, failed emissions and blew the trans in the same month.

General Comments:

Loved the gas mileage... still unsure why this car could get over 20mpg/400 per tank, when most cars with V6's are only getting about the same.

I would almost suspect an electrical fault causing those kind of problems.

The '91 was the first year model to use the Throttle Body Fuel Injection system. I love my 20MPG. Moved one engine over to a truck body, it still gets great gas mileage. Go figure.

I know this is old, but they used throttle body injection in 1989-1990 box body caprices also so this wasn't new to GM.
