Faults:

Rust, a lot of it. The owner before me did not take care of it and let it sit in a lot on its rims.

Small fixable coolant leak at 90,000 miles.

Noisy, but expected from a four cylinder.

Cup holder was broken when I bought it and seemed to be very poorly built.

General Comments:

Handles very well and is fun to drive.

If you get this car take the time or money to rust proof it as well as possible.

Use it to commute every day to work (25 miles each way)

Easy on gas.

Very very reliable, have no major engine issues in the years I've owned it.

Great for a reliable starter car.

Faults:

Sway bar bushing.

Fuel filter.

Brake shoes, pads, front hoses, rear wheel cylinders, front calipers (ABS does not work).

Valve cover gasket.

Windshield washer pump.

Heater core.

Currently running hotter than normal (not overheating). Changed thermostat, Boiled out and sealed radiator, flushed cooling system. Will try water pump next.

General Comments:

This is my wife's car and she loves it. The only real problem is the lack of leg room and trunk space.

The car runs good, gets good gas mileage (about 30 mpg), and uses no oil.

It handles the curves and hills very well.

Not bad at all for a $500 car.

Faults:

The brakes have been replaced twice in four years, and have never really been the greatest.

A transmission switch had to be replaced after weekly stalling leaving me stranded every time. This is apparently a common problem with this particular year.

The speedometer doesn't work at all if it's cool out (IE mornings and winter).

The inside dash lights don't work, so unless your good at guessing your speed at night this is definitely a hazard.

The power door locks no longer function normally, some work some of the time while on other doors, not at all.

The starter was replaced.

The exhaust was replaced.

Power steering hose replaced.

Substantial rusting on the lower half of the entire car.

Inadequate windshield washer spray; leaves the drivers side dangerously dirty while the passeger side squeaky clean. Replacing wipers did not help.

Air conditioning and heat do not work very well.

Anti-lock breaks are extremely touchy which is not only annoying, but very dangerous.

Definitely on the gas guzzler side.

General Comments:

This was an inexpensive first car to purchase, but unfortunately a nightmare to maintain cost-wise (as you can see by the long list above).

This is definitely not a reliable car for long trips on the open road, but served me fine running around the city when it was in good working order.

Faults:

The horn died early on. Replaced for free under warranty.

The starter died at around 70k miles, but that is not really a big deal.

General Comments:

This car was great! Other than the horn, the only things that needed attention were normal maintenance items such as brakes, tires, battery, etc.

Faults:

The starter has been replaced several times. It takes some jiggling to get it going in the morning. It shakes when the A/C is on. Other than that, it is an excellent vehicle.

General Comments:

This is, literally, a family car. My mother purchased the Chevy station wagon in 1992. My sister and I thought she was out of her mind when she bought it and told her, "It will never last."

My mother passed away in 1993. She left everything to my sister and I in equal shares in her will. My sister bought out my share of the car when it had less than 2,000 miles on it. In 1999, she purchased a Japanese car and sold the Chevy to me for $2,000.00 when it had 118,000. I needed a car and was willing to take anything I could afford. My husband, on the other hand, asked me not to buy it. He told me, "I will NOT work on a car that new." He mumbled something about the error of buying a Chevy. You need to understand that he has taken 30 year old cars off of blocks and kept them on the road for years. Unfortunately, my expertise is limited to using the brake, gas and steering wheel. This is, understandably, very frustrating to him.

The first thing I noticed about the car was it shook like a vibrator at stoplights. "It will never last," I told my sister. She insisted that I was wrong and it would be a very reliable car. I drove it from Texas back to Florida and by the time I pulled into my drive way, I was in love. Like any relationship, no one is perfect.

The first thing that went on my Chevy, I lamented that I really should have bought a new car. My husband, the man who swore he would never fix it, frowned at me and replaced a belt. To make a long story short, a few years later Mr. I'll-never-own-a-Cavalier found one in a junkyard and put it on the road. Now, we're a 2 Cavalier family. If that doesn't tell you what an excellent car my 1992 Chevy station wagon is--nothing will!

I would like to find another car just like the one I'm driving now. I imagine there's a little old lady somewhere who only drove it to church on Sunday's and it's sitting in her garage in excellent condition with only 5,000 miles on it. Alas, there are some things in this world that will just never happen.
