1994 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 3.1 FI

Summary:

The ultimate in fun and economy

Faults:

The brakes have failed twice, though this is CAR SPECIFIC and hasn't happened recently. The anti-lock brakes however are a constant glitch, throwing flashing 'service soon' lights and making strange noises.

New battery and alternator at about 75000km, about the right time, maybe a bit premature. Easy enough and cheap to get done.

General Comments:

For the price to purchase and maintain, the style is unbeatable. It became watered down with the latest generation; the '94 is the best looking Z24 out there.

The torque-laying V6 propels this relatively light car from a standstill to whiplash in no time at all, though the 3 speed auto is a bit of a disappointment for such a sporty engine. This car is not designed to be a sports and performance car, and you'd be mistaken to take it as one. It is however a very peppy and fast daily driver.

The handling is the best part of it all. The perfect steering ratio matched with a sport-tuned suspension makes for sure cornering and quick work of parking lots. The front strut brace adds to the stiffness. People underrate the sheer joy of driving this car into bends.

The interior is what you'd expect from a domestic 'economy' car, though a feeling of a much more powerful vehicle is seen by looking at the dash and gauges.

1994 Chevrolet Cavalier RS 2.L4

Summary:

Good gas mileage and cheap on insurance

Faults:

Replace head gasket at 91,000. Replace timing chain and valve (bent when chain broke, required another head gasket..$480 total) at 99,000. Replace alternator twice and fuel pump twice. New battery at 125,000. 4 sets of front brake pads and one set of rear brake shoes. Replace shocks and struts at 130,000.

General Comments:

This car has left me stranded 5 times. The check engine light never works until the car has already quit running.

The body is noisy and creaks and pops around turns. The interior is made very cheap and falls apart easily.

1994 Chevrolet Cavalier RS Coupe 2D 4 cylinder. 2.2 Liter

Summary:

This is highly recommended in performance and value!

Faults:

Still not quite sure what the problem was. When it was 40 degrees below zero, the heater, radio, and the windshield wipers wouldn't work. Also the emergency brake light stayed on. It doesn't happen anymore, because we are in the south now (warmer weather).

Battery went dead around 61,000 miles. My fault... (left the lights on).

Replaced belt at 35,000.

General Comments:

It started every morning even in temperatures way below zero!

It has "Pep," and the "Get up and go" needed in city traffic.

This was, and is still my first car. I haven't had any regrets in my purchase!!!

1994 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 3.1L multi fuel port V6

Summary:

Get one with decent miles, quick, looks great

Faults:

Water pump blew, needed to install a rebuilt one, $80.

Starter went out, $315 for a new one.

Needed a new battery and alternator, around $200-250.

Not good gas mileage at all, maybe I need a new part, I get around 15 miles per gallon, sometimes 10 or 11.

Front sway bar has broken, I still need to fix that, it makes a clunking noise.

General Comments:

Very good looking car for the money. I love my car, it just has too many miles for a car made in America. I wish it only had 15,000.

I am pretty tall, I am glad I don't have to sit in the back seat. It is tiny. Very comfortable ride, kind of bumpy.

It is pretty light for it's engine, pretty quick too, it can keep up with a lot of cars. It could handle better.

I wish it was more reliable. But it has been a pretty good car, nothing over a couple hundred bucks to fix it, and I got a good deal on the car.

I agree with the speed thing. I can keep up with an iroc z-28 (automatic 5.0 t.p.i.) with my 94 z-24 (5-speed 3.1mpi). However not with the gas mileage thing. I get between 15 and 19mpg in the city, but about 35mpg interstate. Either way it's a nice car that's competitive. I beat a few newer z-24's.
