1988 Chevrolet Cheyenne 1500 4.3L V6

Summary:

The best and most reliable truck ever built

Faults:

This truck has been in my family ever since my great grandpa bought it from the dealership.

The truck has had a few problems.

The front left ball joint snapped, heat and A/C doesn't work very well, a few holes in the exhaust (but it has a nice V8 rumble to it), the transmission is slipping, and the speedometer stopped working.

General Comments:

This is a very reliable truck and it has gotten me all over the state of Alabama. Never had any major issues with the truck and it still runs great with 270,000+ miles!

The 4.3 V6 is a very strong motor for this truck and has done a fabulous job. It handles really well for a truck and still rides like it did 10 years ago.

Chevrolet did a great job on this truck and I would definitely buy another one!

1996 Chevrolet Cheyenne 2500 6.5L Detroit turbo diesel

Summary:

Great truck, if you see one, BUY IT

Faults:

The only mechanical issues I ever had was the fuel injector pump, but this was already an issue when I bought it. This was somewhat expensive, but this was the only non-maintenance repair I ever did.

General Comments:

When I had this truck, I was pretty much in love with it. I know it wasn't as powerful as the Cummins 12V, but it was still great to drive, even with the automatic transmission. The transmission was a 4L60E, possibly the only non-crappy auto from this time period. Anyways, I miss the hell out of this truck and being able to do real truck things, but I was dumb and sold it to buy a Ford Ranger. (Worst decision EVER)

1988 Chevrolet Cheyenne Base 4.3

Summary:

Great truck, that will never let you down!

Faults:

Seats started to show some serious wear at 300,000km.

Engine had to be rebuilt at 422,000.

Never undercoated, and started to rust badly at 650,000kms.

Can't remember anything else, other than regular maintenance.

General Comments:

I got this truck for free in 2004. It was used in my parent's work fleet. I grew up around this truck, and it made me love GM! The reason I didn't have it long under my name, was I crashed it the first year I left home. I just have to say this was an amazing truck. My parents still buy GM, and so do I, and none have let us down yet!

The only bad thing about this truck was the mileage, but I mean it's a truck; I got about 18 liters per 100 kms with the 4.3, but that engine had a hell of a life.

I would really like to get a step side one with a V8. They are a great truck, that will never let you down!

1988 Chevrolet Cheyenne C1500 305CI (5.0L) TBI SOHC V8

Summary:

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. Maybe I got lucky

Faults:

In the 236000 miles I have driven this thing (no, that's not a typo), I have had to replace the water pump at 135k), oil pump (at 255k miles) and 2 fuel pumps.

Finally replaced radiator and all coolant hoses at ~340k miles.

Aside from the standard maintenance for any vehicle (brake pads and/or rotors, wheel bearings, exhaust, etc.) I have had NO major repairs or issues.

Had to replace an alternator somewhere within the 236000 miles I put on it (NOT an issue).

General Comments:

This truck was given to me in 1997, in a near-mint condition at 128k miles. I still own it and it has 364k miles on it. Still runs and drives perfectly. It has never had an engine (305CI) or transmission (TH400) replacement/overhaul.

This truck has had very little issues at all, other than standard maintenance parts like any other vehicle.

Fuel economy is not great. Seventeen mpg on a good day, 8 mpg on a bad day.

For a half-ton, 2WD truck, it will carry a lot of weight (the truck does not seem to notice having a run-and-a-half of firewood (~1.5 tons) in the bed and hauling it away).
