1998 Chevrolet Malibu Base 3.1 Multiport

Summary:

The worst car I ever bought; spent more time with my mechanic than in my garage

Faults:

I bought the car for a $1,000.00 when I got back from Iraq because my ex wife left me with no money and a whole bunch of bills. And I think it was the biggest mistake I ever made.

I have never see a car with so many problems; everything showed up a couple of weeks after I bought it like a bomb.

Intake gasket went bad (common problem for this cars), water pump bad, and bad A/C.

So well I fixed for like $550.00.

Running good, but it started to overheat again; the shop said was bad freeze plugs, fixed for like $20.00 bucks.

Keep doing the same problem; shop said bad reservoir, which I bought brand new on eBay.

Kept having the same problem, so I decide to stop the car and buy a very old reliable 1987 Honda Accord DX sedan.

It was the worst nightmare in my life, this car is a headache to my mechanic.

General Comments:

I never recommend this car to anyone looking for a car. Even with its very comfortable interior and nice stereo.

Bad on gas in the city, but good on the highway.

Expensive tune up.

Bad resale value.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS V6

Summary:

This car is nice on the outside, but the mechanics suck

Faults:

Not even a week after I bought it, I had the thermostat replaced because I wasn't getting any heat. Anti freeze was mixing in with my oil because the intake manifold went out. Then the brakes needed replaced, they made the most god awful sound when trying to stop. The brake light was burnt out (so I thought) I had my boyfriend replace the bulb and that same night it stopped working. The bulbs were melted and would only go in half way. Also the radio... I can get only one station in. I don't know if it is the antenna or what.

General Comments:

I bought this car from my cousin. She said that there wasn't anything wrong with it other than the heat not working on the lower settings and it would need brakes soon.

I had a family friend who happens to be a mechanic look it over just in case something else needed replaced. Sure enough I ended up putting in $900 within the first week of owning it.

I thought I was getting a good deal with this car, but now I realize I was better of with my Ford T Bird (only minor problems there)

I do believe there should be a recall on the intake manifold because I have heard nothing but bad things about it.

1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS V6

Summary:

Not a bad car, never left me stranded, but never leave home without your tools

Faults:

I own 2 98' Chevy Malibu's and each one has had the same problems.

1. Short in brake lights.

2. AC temperature control switch malfunction turns on and off in both cars. 1 2 3 blower setting does not work on both cars and only has a fuse for setting 4 and 5.

3. Cheap Chinese metal used in brake rotors.

4. Had to 4 coil springs break on both cars because of Chevy using cheap spring steel. After replacing the complete strut assemblies I still have a lot of noise every time I hit a bump.

5. ABS light is displayed in both cars even after replacing both hub assemblies.

6. Horn started going off for no reason. Unfortunately the horn and airbag assembly are combined and very expensive to replace. I just rerouted to horn to the dash without disconnecting the airbag and have had no further problems.

General Comments:

Over all the car is O.K. The problems I've had have been forwarded to the GM engineers because I feel these problems need to be addressed. Weather they listen to me or not is the question. Thankfully I am an automotive service technician and all the repairs I've done myself. Here's a little advise, instead of purchasing brand new parts for these cars try to get them second hand from junk yards. You'll save a lot of money.
