1999 Chevrolet Malibu 2.4 4 cycl

Summary:

I will think three times before buying another Chevy

Faults:

Rust/rot around the gas tank entrance.

General Comments:

This rust/rot bothers me. I have been very careful to wait a few seconds after pumping the gas before taking the nozzle out of the gas tank entrance. The few times that I have spilled gas on the vehicle I have immediately wiped off the vehicle with wiper fluid. The rust/rot is coming from under the rubber that is suppose to protect the vehicle. It is coming from the inside out. It is going to cost me $632.00 to fix. There is no rust/rot anywhere else on the vehicle.

Is this true for all Malibu's? I have a 1999, bought used. I had a rust problem in the same area that the dealer fixed at no expense. Two years later, it has happened again and I'm fighting with them to have it fixed again, at their expense.

I would like to hear from others with the same problem and take the issue directly to GM. Thanks!!

1999 Chevrolet Malibu

Summary:

So far so good..

Faults:

When I first got the car, we got the tires changed. That's pretty standard.

Then the brakes were squealing, so I took it in and I had to get new rotors or something like that. It cost about $240. They still squeak.

The Air Conditioner goes on and off randomly.

The break light went out, I think it is the fuse because replacing the bulb didn't work.

My radio won't pick up hardly anything.

General Comments:

I think this car handles really well, and it's pretty nice.

I just hate that the A/C goes out all the time, b/c I live in Georgia and it gets hot! But, it seems like this happens on a lot of Malibu's.

Hopefully I won't have to report back saying it is crap. I got it for a good deal.

Your radio problem is fairly common. The radio to antennae cable is two-piece and separates. The cables connect near the front passenger door. I think you need to pull the trim off under the dash on the right side in front of the passenger door. After connecting the cables wrap with tape.

Summary:

Do you smell Citrus? I smell Lemon!

Faults:

When we got home from the dealership, the check engine light was on. Because it was under warranty we took it to a dealer and they found no cause for the light. After numerous attempts at fixing it, they finally found a part that they could replace, under warranty, thank goodness, and the problem seemed to be fixed.

We have had to replace the brakes and rotors twice, at about 45,000 mile intervals. After the second replacement, the brakes began giving problems within a week again.

A leak in the coolant system was traced to a "manifold gasket" which was replaced. The mechanic blamed the age (138,000 miles), but after the repair, it still leaked. Engine coolant light came on sporadically afterward.

Air Conditioning system quits when it wants to, coming on only when the recirculate button is on. Lately it doesn't cool at all and goes on and off at will (or without cause).

ABS light comes on and off.

Seat belts have twisted and plastic parts have deteriorated badly, drivers side has broken.

At 74,000 miles drivers side power window motor went out. Repair was covered under extended warranty, but dealership did not want to honor it at first.

Front right wheel hub assembly had to be replaced due to loud roaring at 130,000 miles.

General Comments:

Car has a good ride, is comfortable and roomy. It has been a good vehicle for my purposes, but the mechanical problems have driven me crazy.

I probably won't consider another GM product for a while.

I mean no offense with the writing this review of these comments, but, frankly... what do you expect on a car that has over 100,000 miles??? Any car, esp one that has over 50,000, is going to start needing all kinds of repairs, esp one that is driven hard every day or even every other day. All cars, foreign and domestic, made after 1976 were not built to last. In these days of low or zero interest rates, cars are built to last 4-5 years and then it's time for a new one.
