2000 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1 V6

Summary:

A good, reliable car, for the money

Faults:

Rotor warpage occurring after tire rotations and wheel balancing. Have dealer check lug nut torque with a torque wrench as impact wrenches are not calibrated and will over-tighten.

Hazard switch failed and caused intermittent turn signal operation. This was repaired under warranty and was a recall item. The repair took 30 minutes and problem has not returned.

Climate control switch malfunctioned where the symbol for floor vent would be defrost, etc. Replaced control unit under warranty and problem has not returned after 2 years.

General Comments:

This car has been extremely reliable and low cost to operate.

Gas mileage is excellent to where I calculated better than 30 MPG on the highway.

Reliability has been very good, and only minor items have occurred which were fixed under warranty. This car has been more reliable that the 1990 Camry DX we used to own.

The interior is comfortable and has held up well.

The exterior is immaculate and no rust or blemishes have shown up.

2000 Chevrolet Malibu Sedan 3.1L V6

Summary:

I would get a Malibu over and over again

Faults:

I previously owned a 1993 Toyota Tercel and boy was that the biggest piece of useless metal I ever got. I sold that car and got my 2000 Malibu. I have no complaints with it, I drive like crazy and it keeps up with me.

I had to replace my front rotors because they warped, and had to dry the ignition coil, but that was after I drove into a flood.

My check engine light is on, but I understand that's due to a faulty fuel filter common in these models.

General Comments:

Overall I get the best mileage from all vehicles I have asked about, roughly 22 miles per gallon. With gas prices going up, I am glad I spend what I spend and not what others do.

2000 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1L V6

Summary:

Good car, but cross your fingers

Faults:

My car surges (Rpm's up and down) when idoling on a hot engine.

Hesitation when I gradually increase speed. I have it in the shop getting the fuel pump looked at.

Noise and vibration in the front wheels when braking.

General Comments:

I bought a used car, OK, that doesn't mean within two weeks it should be in the dealerships service department having work done on it. GM Certified Used Cars, does that really mean anything?

Or do they expect me to wait until it needs towing before they need to fix it?

Other than the above listed items, my car is very nice.

I have the same problems with my brakes. Lots of noise, vibration when braking, especially at highway speeds. took it back to the dealer and they said there was rust buildup on the rotors, that they could re-surface them, but it is not covered by my extended warranty. This is months after I bought it! Also had problems with the heating/AC, and car stalling on me. Overall I am not happy with the car.

2000 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.1L

65k - ABS light came on again - pulled fuse - not replaced

72k - replaced bushing on front right tie-rod assembly myself

80k - Theft-lock system disabled

97k - Front wheel bearings need to be replaced, just detected an engine coolant leak.

General Comments:

My previous car was a Pontiac Sun fire. I loved that car. Lots of factory recalls, but I personally had no problems with the car.

The Malibu has had nothing, but problems since day one. I didn't have the stomach to go through all the brake trouble, so I decided to replace the pads and rotors Myself. I have not had any break problems since.

I have had many cars in my life, and drove them all to 100k+, but not once have I ever had to replace the wheel bearings. My next car is a Honda.

Most of the problems mentioned are regular. Tires replaced, signals faulting, brakes... it comes with wear and tear. It has to be taken care of and not driven like a race car.

I have had similar problems with my 2000 Malibu. I think the problems we're experiencing with brakes and rotors go far beyond normal wear and tear. Mine went bad before I ever hit 25,000 miles.

Another good way to save your brakes in city driving, is to lock the transmission out of o/d, it utilizes engine braking, so you have to use your brakes even less, and it will also save your transmission, as it eliminates gear hunting between 35-45 MPH.
