1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 4.3Liter V6

Summary:

A rolling La-Z-Boy

Faults:

Fuel pump gave out at 77,000 miles.

General Comments:

What's not to like. A Monte from this era (when Montes still had style) is a gem to behold. This car is inexpensive and simple to repair. Mechanics actually like working on it for its' "old school" appeal. I got the car for $500 from a woman who had completely neglected it, so it needed quite a bit of rehabilitation. The oil was the color of pitch; just to give you a sense. After a complete tune-up, alignment, tires, ball joints, radiator, fuel filter and a new OEM hood ornament, it's stylin'. Gun metal gray paint. Need I say more?

1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Sport Coupe 4.3L V6 262ci

Summary:

Stylish beauty

Faults:

Engine has begun to leak oil.

Leather trim on the seats are starting to rip.

The fuse for the interior keeps on blowing, and I've had to replace it many times.

The left-rear quarter and also the trunk has minor rust problems.

The factory stereo tuner does not seem to be working any longer.

Needs a new headliner and a new carpet.

General Comments:

The car runs beautifully, and is great on gas.

The engine has a lot of power, and I can do brake stands with no trouble at all.

The interior is very roomy, and is very well done.

The body looks like a model, nice curves, and a nice rear end.

1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SC 305 V8

Summary:

Now I know why people go crazy over Chevrolet

Faults:

Nothing yet.

General Comments:

The choke does not engage.

The wire-spoke wheel covers rattle at low speed because of the lug anti-theft mechanism.

This car is moves faster than my 1980 Cutlass with the identical Chevy 305 motor.

This car not handle or feel anything like my Cutlass.

This car does not compare to any Oldsmobile I have owned even though it is billed as a similar vehicle.

1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS 305 cubic inch V8

Summary:

A solid and reliable car with a smooth ride , clean lines, and great looks!

Faults:

Replaced rear axle seal as it started to leak at 108,000 miles.

Replaced heater core when it started to leak at 134,000 miles.

Transmission rebuilt by previous owner at 100,000 miles.

Engine rebuilt at 105,000 miles by previous owner.

General Comments:

Bought car from original owner and they provided ALL records for this car. All the records for this 1985 Monte fit into a slim manila folder! This car has been very reliable and it rides like a dream.

I have found a wealth of aftermarket parts for this car at great prices.

Most any mechanic can work on this car, no more having to search forever for a shop that can do the work.

Parts are cheap compared to newer and foreign cars. Many OEM Parts are still available through dealer.

Engine swap is quite simple on this car. If you need more power it won't cost you a fortune to drop in a larger engine.

LS didn't come with dual exhaust as a stock option... what a pity.

The T-tops on this car don't leak despite the fact that the seals are original and are cracked and worn.

Interior is very comfortable. Cloth interior is durable, but has faded over time due to UV damage.

With T-top option there is little light up front at night for reading maps and such. Solution is to add aftermarket rear view mirror with map lights.

What a great looking car!

1985 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS 406

Summary:

Classic styling, great driver

Faults:

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) was bad when I bought the car, as was the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid.

I replaced them and the car ran fine.

General Comments:

The car runs much better with a 406 smallblock motor, although the 305 wasn't bad at all. It just didn't have the power I wanted.

The 406 turned it into the muscle car that it should have been originally.
