1991 Chevrolet S-10 Base rally with wheels 2.5 Iron Duke

Summary:

Chevrolet manufactured and sold me an exceptionally reliable truck

Faults:

The engine and transmission have been, and are outstanding.

There have been zero problems with the powertrain or brakes. I have only had to change brake pads twice and I do mostly city-small town driving. The engine still does not burn a drop of oil.

Needed to replace the fuel pump and gas tank at about 120,000 miles. The alternator failed at about 85,000 miles. The fuel gauge died at 135,000 miles. The body remains solid. The only failing is one 1/16th-inch pinhole below and behind the passenger front wheel. Replacement parts have been cheap and available.

General Comments:

This truck was and is still great. The vehicle is exceptionally reliable.

The engine is solid. Mileage with the 2.5 L4 exceeds 35mpg for flat elevation highway travel because of a stellar overdrive automatic transmission.

The truck accelerates slowly, but never fails to gain speed and never knocks under stress in hilly terrain.

Mileage suffers because it is a bit underpowered, but again the transmission maximizes the limited horsepower by up-shifting or down-shifting very smoothly.

Handling is very predictable. Stopping distances with tires one width size broader than manufacturer specifications compare favorably to a older model Ford Escort I also own.

The original equipment painted rally wheels have not rusted. The cheap hubcaps disappeared many years ago. But, that I can remember this as being one of the problems speaks volumes about the small number of problems this vehicle has given me.

Chevrolet should be proud that it manufactured this pickup truck. It serves and has served me well.

I whole heartily agree with you. My s-10 with the 2.5 just turned 241,00 miles and runs just as smooth as the day I got it. The body is solid as a rock, no rust. I hope to get another 250,00 miles out of it.

My 1991 S 10 Tahoe short bed woth 2.8 V6 and 5 speed stick has been the best vehicle I could have hoped for.

It burns no oil, has given only minor electrical problems. However it is so rusty that it is becoming dangerously thin in places (frame). I blame myself with this as it was never 'rust proofed'. It was assembled at Shreveport Assembly and intended for sale in southern states. I moved it to Ohio and the winters killed it. As I have said that is my fault.

I am on the lookout for a sound rolling chassis, which are hard to find in this area.

Summary:

This truck is like the Energizer bunny, it keeps going

Faults:

I had to have the perportioning valve replace when the truck was still under warranty.

Right side suspension replace, because the spring wouldn't seat correctly in the saddle of the lower control arm. This was still under warranty.

General Comments:

I have owned my 1991 Chevy S10 sense I bought it new back in May of 1991. It now has almost 134,000 miles on her. She runs just as good as the day I bought her. She has mostly highway mile on her. Over the years I have customized her to please me. I placed her in one car show back in 91 and took third place first time out with her. I try and keep the maintance up on her at all times. I have people to this day think it is a new truck. The 4.3 is a very powerful motor for this truck. With the exhaust upgraded to a Flow-Master exhaust system I now get 20 or more mile to a gallon of gas. This also depends on the way I drive. I am pleased with my Chevy S10. I am only 44 year old and this is my third vehicle out of four I have ever own. This is also my first Chevrolet, out of owning two Ford products and one Dodge.
