1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.6

Summary:

Economical with excellent performance

Faults:

- I had to replace both rear tires at approximately 150k and the front tires at approximately 140K.

- Some electrical problems occurred at approximately 160K.

- The stitching on the covers of the seats has started to unravel, possibly due to sun damage.

General Comments:

The performance for this little car is superior to any car I have ever had. As the years and miles add up it continues to provide superior service in terms of gasoline consumption and repairs.

Typically consumption is 43-45 mpg for slower drives around town, and 50-55 mpg for longer trips on the freeway.

On the freeway this 15 year old car purrs along at 75-85 mph and has been known to pass newer model cars on an uphill climb.

It is not a sprinter in the sense that it will go from zero to 80 in a nano-second. In fact I would compare the Chevrolet Sprint to the turtle.

Well written and accurate review. I recently searched for and purchased my second Sprint, due to gas prices, and will probably never give mine up either.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Hatchback 1.0 L 3-cylinder

Summary:

A great bargain in every way

Faults:

At 60,000 miles I had to replace the air conditioner drier and humidifier.

At 170,000 miles I replaced the timing belt, all engine gaskets, distributor and solenoid.

The silver paint, like all GM silver paint I have experienced, has faded quickly even though carefully maintained.

Interior materials are cheap, as one might expect with a car that, fully loaded with all options available in 1986, listed at $7800.

General Comments:

This has been a great little car. It has been extremely dependable, gets superb gas mileage (40-43) and still manages to surprise people leaving red lights (not a speedster, but very nimble for a car with only 48 horsepower).

With 178,000 miles on it, it still runs and drives great.

With gas prices what they are, I'm still very happy with it as a "work car".

1986 Chevrolet Sprint 2 door hatchback 1.0 carb gas

Summary:

A tough little warrior

Faults:

Replaced both drive shafts twice (second set free under warranty) and clutch once.

Under normal maintenance, it needed a set tires twice, a muffler, a fuel filter, an air filter, a few bulbs here and there, an alternator and one set of brake pads/shoes all around. Also an oil change with filter about every 5,000 miles.

General Comments:

This is the most economical car I have driven. I purchased the car for 800 dollars. I have driven this car farther than any new car I have had in the past (150,000 miles). It also has a "spunky" motor that zips around pretty well and can still get 50 miles to the gallon of gas on the highway.

It is also a very tough little car. Since I had the car I accidently hit a pheasant, a deer, a raccoon, and a pick-up in a parking lot. Also, it was hailed on and by softball sized hail which blew out the front and rear windows and left several dimples in the roof and hood of the car.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint 1.0

Summary:

Best commuter car ever made

Faults:

At 140,000 miles the timing belt gave out (no engine damage otherwise), but since I had acquired a wrecked Sprint with 20 miles on a rebuild, I installed the new engine, and clutch, that was in it. The brakes have been done twice.

General Comments:

I am 6ft, 250lbs and am perfectly comfortable in this car.

This sucker also gets me to work and back (60 miles, round trip per day) for about $16 a week.

I love this car and will continue to repair it as needed till it or I die.

1986 Chevrolet Sprint Plus 1.0

Summary:

Knuckle scrapper

Faults:

The only thing that I've had any problems with is the carb/fuel system. It's a pain to have it worked on because the cars weren't in production long enough for anyone to get to know it that well.

General Comments:

This car is a very economical and reliable, but it is also very HARD to work on, it takes forever to do simple task because everything is so close together, it's a real knuckle scrapper.
