1998 Chevrolet Tahoe

Summary:

I love Tahoes, but they seem dangerous when they get older

Faults:

Fuel pump at 100,000.

Transmission at 130,000.

Map sensors.

Ignition harness.

Windshield wipers.

General Comments:

Just wanna say it was a dangerous situation when the fuel pump went out. Thank god I wasn't on the freeway, but when my ignition harness fried out, I lost all power to the car, not even brakes. I was on the freeway going 80 in the fast lane, and the car just died. I was able to get to the slow lane, and then over to the emergency lane, and coasted until my car stopped. Very scary when you have a child in the car. Why did my brakes just stop like that?

1998 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 5.6 litre

Summary:

Like a rock! Today's Chevy trucks

Faults:

I am about to replace my transfer case.

General Comments:

I own not only the 1992 Blazer, but a 1998 Tahoe.

Both two doors are the best vehicles I have ever owned.

My 92 has 334k and does not drip a drop. Bought with 92k and purred like a kitten even with the 3" flowmasters.

Second transmission @ 224k, and yes I 4x4 in the Pacific Northwest.

My 98 has 176k and does not drip a drop. Bought it with 67k and still runs beautiful.

I am now replacing the transfer case and looking forward to off-roading with my 18 year old daughter who now has my 92.

I have driven a Chevrolet two door 4x4 for over ten years. I will never look for anything but a newer 2 door!

1998 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 5.7L V8

Summary:

Like a rock!

Faults:

Leather Drivers side seat loseing finish.

Water pump began to go out at 80000mi.

Replaced entire exhaust system (not the manifold) twice due to in town driving.

Fuel pump went out in driveway, hit it with a brick, and was able to start the truck 1 last time to get to the dealer.

Battery post broke inside of battery, this is the only time that this truck has left me stranded.

The tires seem to ware unevenly.

General Comments:

I love this truck.

Pulled a 4ton 35 foot long camper for one year like a champ.

The big V8 gives it excellent power.

When turning you can feel the body sway quite a bit.

I have pulled trucks larger than my Tahoe out of ditches with no problem at all.

1998 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 5.7 Vortec

Summary:

With the exception of the annoying "Service Engine Soon" light, I wish I had a fleet of these!

Faults:

My water pump went between 100k and 125k.

Two oxygen sensors went not long after that.

Tie rods needed replacing about the same time as the oxygen sensors.

The "Service Engine Soon" light has been on and off constantly over the past 4 years.

General Comments:

I love the spaciousness, safety that its size affords my wife and kids, and I absolutely love the power in the big V-8. It has never, ever stranded us and has started everyday since we have had it.

1998 Chevrolet Tahoe LS 5.7

Summary:

Mixed emotions

Faults:

New battery @ 50000.

New front & rear brakes @ 60000.

New lower intake gasket @ 72000.

New stainless steel exhaust @ 65000.

New tires @ 65000 (tires wear unevenly)

New universal joint @ 70000.

Driver side door repainted due to rust @ 55000.

New alternator @ 55000.

2 new water pumps @ 60000 & 72000.

General Comments:

Truck looks pretty good for it's year. It did have some rust on the driver's door (it's a 2 door model).

The tires wear funny even with frequent rotation.

The stainless dual exhaust sounds sick & mean! I had to get it replaced. The original stainless exhaust (made by Flowmaster) rusted at the welds.

The brakes are no good.

It has good acceleration.

The 4X4 sucks. It's light in the back end. I rarely use the auto-4X4 and opt for the 4X4 high b/c I live in PA and we get some snow up North.

1998 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 5.7

Summary:

Comfortable and trustworthy

Faults:

Check engine light went on at 52,000. Had the dealership reset it twice. It has stayed off since.

Had to replace original battery at 47,000. The positive terminal broke off and was leaking acid.

Door key will not unlock drive or passenger door so I use the remote entrance key.

Driver and passenger windows are constantly frozen shut in the winter time.

4X4 doesn't work well- light backend and it fishtails badly.

Has some squeaks when going over railroad tracks or bumps in the road.

Already have signs of rust on the driver side door and tailgate.

Center console release button broke. I couldn't get the console open for weeks. Now, I have to find parts to repair the latch. As of right now, I have a bungee strap around it to keep it closed.

General Comments:

I enjoy the spaciousness of the cab. It has a comfortable ride and I enjoy sitting up higher than most other SUV's.

I would recommend getting the 4 door Tahoe instead of the 2 door. It can become bothersome flipping the passenger seat whenever you have someone has to ride in the backseat.

I don't care for the flip-down rear seats. They never seem to lay perfectly flat, even after removing both headrests and pushing the front seats forward.

I don't like the position of the 4x4 options. It is too close to the steering wheel.

I like the center console for storage, but I hate the map holder that flips up. You always seem to be placing your elbow on the hard plastic which is both uncomfortable and annoying because it creaks.

I agree that the 4 door model is better than the 2 door.

As far as the middle console goes, mine broke too, but still opens and closes just fine.

I really love these SUVs. It's the best I have ever owned; very reliable and powerful, and great for traveling and camping. I wouldn't drive anything else. Great trucks.
