2015 Chevrolet Tahoe 5.3 V8

Summary:

Very nice truck, but not as good as the older generations

Faults:

Lifter tap repaired under warranty. Involves removing the cylinder head.

(Out of warranty issues)

Multiple check engine codes requiring attention.

Replaced sway bar links.

Hood and roof faded. Repainted the hood. Never did the roof as it’s not really noticeable due to the vehicle's height.

Tires seem to wear fast even with proper alignment.

Just had to replace the oil pump. The solenoid value was bad. This was a job and a half involving a lot of work and money.

General Comments:

I like this truck. It’s very powerful, smooth, quiet and comfortable. Perfect for road trips and it’s been on quite a few.

Loaded to the max with options and features. Some are unnecessary and annoying.

Steering and braking are very impressive for such a large vehicle.

Just because it looks good doesn’t make it superb. The above issues are uncalled for if you ask me. The “LS” V8 engines should not have these issues after being supposedly tried and true after so many years. I’ve seen the simple good old TBI 350 used in the first generation exceed up to three hundred thousand miles without hardly any major problems.

The "same" engine today is not the same as the one made 15 years ago. It can actually be the same block, but with many changes around, including at the head. Car makers need to make design changes to improve mpg and overall performance. If you look, engines are getting more and more complex just by the many sensors and hoses around the engine, on top of the internal changes and changes in the engine management. Because of these changes, issues are to be expected even on "proven" engines. It's unfortunate. What is more, these changes are being done by different engineers than the ones who built the original engine. Maybe the graduates are less good than they were in the past. Or maybe the industry has such pressure, the work is being done with less care.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe LTZ 5.3

Summary:

Very comfortable vehicle with great MPG. Too many major components wearing out early

Faults:

Infotainment unit replaced in the first year. The voice command system never works.

The magnetic ride wore out at 83,000 miles.

The transmission died 90,000 miles and 59 months. One month before the warranty ran out.

General Comments:

I bought the Tahoe new. The LTZ was the high end version. It’s very comfortable to ride on long trips. The MPG on interstate trips is still at 22 MPG at 93,000 miles.

My pet peeves include the low hanging front air dam. I have ripped three of them off. Mostly on curbs and driveways. I finally had the body shop cut a few inches off the bottom of the next one. That has worked great.

The LTZ shares the magnetic ride with the Escalade. It went out at 83,000 miles. That was a $3600 repair. My previous Chevy an GMC trucks never needed suspension parts before 150,000.

My nieces 2015 Tahoe LTZ magnetic ride went out at 36,000 miles.

The worst was the transmission TC shredding at 90,000 miles. The bad part was the trans died on vacation in Branson, MO.

The good news was the Chev dealer in Branson is awesome. The other was the warranty had one month left on the power train. No charge. Yea.

The original factory five spoke wheels rust pitted bad at three years. Very disappointed. Chevrolet blamed it on road chemicals.

I have had a few rattles that were easy fixes. The front end has had only a front end alignment which I do when getting new tires. I’m half way through the third set of tires.

Right now at 93,000 and five years the truck looks great. It rides great and is very comfortable on road trips.
