1998 Chrysler Neon

Summary:

A short-term car

Faults:

The head gasket has blown twice in the first 3 years.

The water pump had to be replaced in the first year and a half.

The tire rod and steering unit had to be replaced in the first year and a half.

General Comments:

This car is very comfortable because the seats have lumbar support.

Other than those major issues that were covered under warranty, the car rides pretty smooth.

1998 Chrysler Neon Sport 2.0 DOHC

Summary:

Horrible build quality, cheap components and terrible service

Faults:

Exhaust Manifold Gasket need warranty work at 9000km.

Needed the same work again at 15000km.

Stock Eagle GA's need to be replaced at 3000km. Horrible wear for low performance tires.

Doors creak very badly despite lubrication starting at 15000KM.

Exhaust rattles against subframe.

Front Rotors warped and needed to be replaced at 40000KM. Every Dodge I have ever owned (4 in total) had this problem.

Plug Wires bad at 35000. Dealer tried to charge me before I took it to another dealer that replaced under warranty.

Plugs were fouled before their time. Dealer wanted over $50 to replace them. Bought plugs and had them replaced for less than $25.

Head Gasket gone at 50000. typical problem. No coverage, but dealer replaced it no charge labour due to the common occurance of the problem.

60000KM sunroof will not open.

70000 km exhaust manifold warped. Dealer wanted to replace it, but I had it machined and repaired at another mechanic.

Now bushings in front suspension are gone. Also motor mounts and belts are prematurely worn.

General Comments:

Decent power from the twin cam 150 HP engine.

Came loaded with everything, but cruise control for a decent price.

They must put these things together with bubble gum. Horrible quality on every part of the car. I cannot belive that these parts would wear out so quickly on what was basically a brand new car.

Coverage needs to be about 6 years long to head off all the problems. Service at dealers has been rude and very poor quality work.

Do NOT buy one of these cars used. You will regret every minute of it.

Well written!I totally agree with you on the quality of the car. I have a 95 Neon and we had to have the head gaskets replaced about every 40,000 miles. The exhaust manifold was cracked and the wire harness started smoking through the steering column. Now the car stalls and you have to let it sit for about 5 minutes before it'll start. The dealer wants $500 to fix the head gasket leak. We determined that car is not worth the money!

I can only speak from my experience, but I've had a great run with my 1998 Neon. I bought it new, and have had it for almost 5 years. It sounds like you ran into a bad dealer. Every dealer I've worked with has been professional and helpful. Work done under warranty: fuel line replacement, new plugs and wires (yes, they went out early, but were covered), clutch cable, multi-function switch replacement. After the warranty was out (at about 75,000 miles), I had to have the head gasket replaced. The dealer split the cost and it was her idea to use a multi-layered steel gasket to prevent future problems. I expect to have this car for another 75,000 miles at least, and maybe even give it to my kid. Thanks for the review, though. I guess I just got a good one.

1998 Chrysler Neon 2.0

Summary:

Beware this is trash, junk, garbage

Faults:

1) 2 head gaskets.

2) Front brake rotors replaced twice.

3) A/C compressor is junk.

4) Idle has never been right.

5) Check engine light stays on dealer, can't find the problem.

6) Muffler has fallen off 3 times.

General Comments:

This car is a heap of trash! I hate it and I wish I had never bought the thing. You can't trade it in because it has no value whatsoever. Paint is cheap, interior is pathetic, spends more time at Chryslers garage than at my house..

My brother works for a Dodge Chrysler Plymouth dealer in Northern Pennsylvania, apparently every year the Neon was made they would blow head gaskets all the time. That might not sound like something very big, but the labor would make it about a thousand dollar repair if not more. The best thing to do with a Neon is stay away from them.
