2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited 4 cylinder

Summary:

Absolute junk!!

Faults:

Head gasket went @ 129,000.

General Comments:

This car is a sheer disappointment! Bought it Jan. '08 for $4600. A year later and many trips in and out of the garage, and it now has a blown head gasket. $1200 repair! I have done everything to properly maintain (oil/fluid changes etc.) this piece of junk and that was the final straw! It's leaving my sight tomorrow, FOREVER!

I thought it wouldn't be bad on gas since it is a 4 cyl. Was I ever surprised when I discovered it only gets 21-22 mpg. That's only about 250-275 miles on a full tank! It has no get up and go! It is by far the most sluggish car I have ever owned. Thanks Chrysler for putting a Cruiser body on top of a Dodge Neon! (And when you actually do "get on it" it sounds like the transmission is going to fly apart!)

BUYERS BEWARE!!! I know it is different and you might think it looks cool, but it is not worth all the headaches! I wish I had never bought this car!!

I would think a test drive would've told you whether the PT Cruiser did or did not have enough power for your needs or liking.

As for the reliability issues - $4,600. for a Chrysler product with over 100,000 miles on it probably is not the most well thought-out buying decision you could've made.

Unfortunately this is what happens when a buyer purchases a vehicle because he/she like its looks, and throw caution to the wind.

2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Touring Edition 2.4 Non turbo

Summary:

Excellent car

Faults:

Transaxle solenoid at 165,000 km.

A/C condenser at 195,000 km.

General Comments:

This is probably the best car I have ever owned. Mostly highway driven at 245,000 km, I have only performed routine maintenance, oil changes at 5000 km, and the above noted repairs.

The car is just starting to show a little rust around the rear door hatch lever.

I am 6 foot 2 inches and 250lbs, and there is plenty of room for me and three passengers. You simply cannot beat the interior room of this car, especially with the rear seats tumbled forward.

The rear shelf is rigid enough to hold 30 or 40 pound without buckling, and adds to the storage room with the rear seats in the upright position.

2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited

Electrical nightmare

Left passenger window motor at 41,200.

Air bag light problem (spring coil) at 55,245.

Front dash cover cracked at 55,270.

Front window panel lights at 55,305.

Air bag light problem (again) at 55,400.

Air bag light problem (continues) at 55,460.

Struts & shocks at 60,000.

Ignition problems (key getting stuck in) at 78,000.

Engine light (various sensors) at 79,000.

Radiator leaking 110,000.

General Comments:

I bought this car used at 40k miles, and was quite aware from reading forums about the PT Cruiser's electrical problems. The car lived up to its expectation, giving me headaches on a regular basis. Sometimes it would light up like a Christmas tree, and a minute later everything would be all fine again.

As far as engine and tranny problems; I have to say none whatsoever. It doesn't get great gas mileage nor horrible either. I usually average anywhere combined of 23 to 25 miles to the gallon.

Overall, I would have to say that this car is completely underpowered for its weight, and it's a blind spot king. If you like the look, then get it, but be prepared to face electrical problems head on.

2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited Edition 2.4 liter

Summary:

Great value in a very functional form

Faults:

I have owned two P.T. Cruisers.

The first one had 69000 on it when I bought unseen from Atlanta Georgia; I live in Michigan. I paid $4500.00 for the car.

The only non normal wear part that I replaced was the power steering pump. I did the repair on my own for a cost of $98.00.

It was a very reliable car. I sold it at 115000 miles for $5000.00, after driving it for two years.

I then purchased another one owner 2001 model, again unseen, for $6000.00 with 50000 miles on it. Had it shipped to my house, and so far I have been pleased with my purchase.

My one complaint is the chrome factory wheels; the chrome does not hold up, and the tires will not seal on the beads.

I also replaced one $25.00 sensor.

General Comments:

These little cars are great value. I have had nothing but great service from them.

In town I normally get about 22 mpg, and on trips I get 30 mpg.

The car handles well, brakes good, all the options work well, the heated leather seats are great in the cold Michigan winters, and the traction in snow is excellent, but then again, a lot of that is due to having good tires.

The seats are easy to remove for added cargo hauling.
