1998 Chrysler Sebring Coupe LX 6 cylinder 2.5

Summary:

It's a love hate thing

Faults:

I have replaced ball joints and tie rods, left and right, about every 80,000 since I've owned the car.

Brakes, rotors and one time the entire system, about every 75,000.

Tires every 75,000.

Transmission has been OK.

Tune up at 12000 with new spark cables.

Manifold at 130,000; was super expensive. I believe the total bill that time was 4,000 including new rods and joints again.

Distributor system failed at 160,000 for 1300 dollars, however electricals then failed taking several weeks to discover a faulty wire. The dealer was outstanding; replacing computer, all wiring, and after having spent nearly 8000 in two years with oil changes, tires, all the other stuff, they didn't have the heart or courage to tap me again.

Driver's door handle has broken in the last year twice, so I'm on my second brand new unit; 350 each time.

Fog lamps have not worked for more than two weeks. Each time I replace the bulbs since the distributor went. Oh, and since then I also get an electrical shock every time I get out of the car.

Front bumper wrap got ripped apart last year by a protruding manhole cover, and now the passenger side door panel skirt keeps falling off.

I've averaged 3000-5000 per year in maintenance for a car I paid 16500 for.

General Comments:

I do enjoy driving the car, and have put some miles on it; mostly highway. My wife and family love it, so I'll likely keep it. It is fun to drive, and looks pretty sporty - it's a third car at this point; something fun for the girls to drive.

I've kept the body in very good shape, so I'll replace the bumper wrap, but I still need new rims as they are all bent again, or maybe I am for spending so much on this beast.

1998 Chrysler Sebring Coupe LXI 6

Summary:

Junk!

Faults:

The Chrysler Sebring is a car that was not put together right.

1. The panels are a joke; they fly off.

2. The door handles break frequently, especially in summer.

3. The windows rattle.

I feel all 1998 Chrysler Sebring owners should get their money back!

First off, Sebring Coupes don't have 2.4s.

Secondly, it's a 10 year old car....yeah, things are gonna rattle. And the panels can't fly off, they're attached on with about a half dozen clips. So unless someone took it off and put it on wrong (perhaps during some accident repair work), this is completely bogus.

I agree the 1998 Chrysler Sebring isn't something to brag about; it is poorly built and expensive to maintain. As far as the panels are concerned, I too have had that problem the clips are made of nylon and they dry rotted the ones that didn't just break the fiberglass.

Also a word of advice, make sure to replace your timing belt at 80,000 on the dot or you will end up like we did in the middle of nowhere, with no cell service and a big piece of scrap aluminum under the hood.

1998 Chrysler Sebring Coupe LXI 2.4

Summary:

Overall it's a disaster waiting to happen

Faults:

I own a 98 Chrysler Sebring and have noticed over the last few months that my transmission is having a slipping feeling, but not sure if this is exactly it. When I'm driving for a while at 60mph or more, I'm fine until I stop and have to proceed. Then when I proceed to drive again, having to get back up to speed, the car's struggling getting to the speed. The rpm's are getting stuck between 2 or 3 while my speedometer is reading only 40mph. I then learned to pull my car over let it sit for a few minutes, and then when I proceed to drive it's fine.

General Comments:

I also have issues with the rims easily bending. Now as far as the tires I buy the best tires at Goodyear. Honestly you just have to spend a little for good quality.

The handles are always breaking.

The headlights are fogged up and look horrible.

Sunroof is great, but the vinyl has come off.

I have an issue also with the inside lights not coming on all the time.

Mitsubishi is responsible for the engine of the vehicle, but Chrysler is responsible for the vehicle. Now Chrysler does not have a contract with Mitsubishi anymore. Chrysler manufactures their own engine. Makes you think, huh!
