1997 Chrysler Town and Country LXI 3.8

Summary:

It is the best car I've ever owned

Faults:

The electric locks engaged whenever I made a right turn, which turned out to be a $9.00 part and an independent garage who found and fixed it. I just replaced the transmission last week at 134,000 miles.

General Comments:

It's been a wonderful car. Only required regular maintenance/service--tires, oil, battery, transmission service, etc.

Have not had any trouble with it whatsoever.

It is very comfortable, easy and responsive to drive and sits high enough that the driver can see everything easily.

It gets about 24 mpg on the road and 20 in town.

I love it for driving my grandchildren. Each has a comfortable seat and easy access from sliding doors on either side.

There is nothing about this car I don't like.

1997 Chrysler Town and Country Lxi 3.5

Summary:

Nice, but high maintenance

Faults:

I have a problem with my 1997 Town and Country that I hope others can help me with. It stalls when going down the road which is very dangerous. This has been going on for about a year now, and was very infreqent at first, but now is becoming an every week event. I've seen other Chrysler models also have this behavior--e.g., Cirrus. In fact on this website there have been many people indicating that they have found this same type of problem. Does anyone else with a T&C have this problem? If so, please let me know. Also, if you found a solution, let me know that too!

General Comments:

Excellent ride for taking trips!

That happened in my van also. Turns out I had a bad egr valve. When coming to stop or slow down it would stick open causing the car to stall. I've had no problems since having it fixed! Hope this helps.

1997 Chrysler Town and Country LXi 3.8 Liter V6

Summary:

Reliable, comfortable, roomy and relatively good on fuel

Faults:

Replaced fuel pump around 140k miles.

Replaced front wheel hub bearings around 150k miles. One easy, one hard to do.

Replaced windshield wiper switch/handle (was bad in all 97's), caused wipers to just go on whenever and vehicle fault light warnings, figured this out at 145k miles. Everything good after replacement.

Replaced radiator fan switch (thermistor?) at 142k, had gone bad (a lot of 97's will have this) and was causing the radiator fan to run intermittently, resulting in overheating in stop and go traffic. Not expensive to have done.

Tops of headlight lenses have become crazed, probably from too many automatic car washes (will just use no touch washes in the future).

General Comments:

Very reliable vehicle overall, heard that the engine type makes a difference here (this being the 3.8L V6).

Gets about 21 MPG in mixed traffic which is outstanding for a vehicle so large.

Replaced fuel pump, wheel hub bearings, but expect some of that at 150K miles.

Very comfortable to ride/drive in.

There is a product called plastic polish you can buy at the hardware or auto paint store. If you sand the plastic of your headlights without buffing out the fine scratches the crazing will come back ten fold polish the crazing out. Then you have "like new" headlights.

Also, to avoid damaging your paint, remove the headlights prior to polishing them.

1997 Chrysler Town and Country LXI

Summary:

Got to get another one

Faults:

Light door switch goes. causing lights to disco flash, Rear window switch broke.

General Comments:

I started with an Rare 89 ES, still have it, moved up to 94 ES, then 97 Town and Country LXI. Listen up drive these units at 55/50 MPH and the gas mileage is fantastic. I Get 34 MPG Imperial or 28 MPG US. Also put in third gear in the city, your mileage will go up, when not using the lock up converter and overdrive. City means any with too many stop signs.

Now looking at 99 or 2001.

1997 Chrysler Town and Country LXI V6 3.8 liter

Summary:

In my opinion this vehicle should rate very high, and is very reasonable in price for the quality

Faults:

At 105,000 miles the transmission seals had to be replaced.

General Comments:

This vehicle handles very smoothly. It is very roomy inside, and both my children love the extra space.
