1995 Dodge Avenger Highline 2.0 I4
Summary:
Hidden gem, now dead
Faults:
This car is amazing, only basic maintenance needed; timing belts, and brake pads.
Had to change the water pump once.
Clutch never went, original at 197000 miles!!!
Seats are plush, but lack lumbar support over long distances.
This car can take beatings, such as hitting snow banks and guard rails without so much as a small dent or scratch.
General Comments:
This car was the secret gem of the Dodge/Chrysler company.
The engine, while underpowered, could have real gusto when revved high enough. Great mpg, with the lowest at 24, average 28, and highest at 38 on the highway with AC!
The large volume of interior could haul 3 adults in the back quite comfortably, while the huge trunk and folded seats could haul 9 foot long boards with it all enclosed in the car!
The car handles great in the winter, with the larger tires and front wheel drive giving it great control in the ice of upstate New York.
I really wish they hadn't killed off the engine, and the new Avenger cannot live up to the specs and respect I had for the previous model. The company did wrong by eliminating the original lean coupe style, and using a bold, beefy, large vehicle instead. Would be great to at least bring back the Neon or a hatch version of it, instead of the Caliber.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

Lot of stuff you can fix yourself. windshield wipers, very easy to fix. and probably with the cost is due to the fact that everything has to be imported (it's a Mitsubishi and based on the old Galant plateform.)
