1989 Dodge D250 5.9 Cummins diesel

Summary:

Great old school truck with a motor that will outlast me

Faults:

Injection pump, starter, injectors, control arms.

General Comments:

I bought this truck from my niece following my brother in-law's death. The truck had been sitting at least a year, maybe more. I had the front suspension rebuilt from control arms out, rebuilt injection pump, injectors, starter, body rust over rear fender wells repaired and full respray to include bedliner. Interior is in remarkably good shape; no cracks in the dash or split in the seat.

Odometer shows 90,000, but no way to tell how many times it's rolled. The truck has a fifth wheel base in the bed and the top of the tailgate showed obvious 5th wheel damage prior to replacement. Combined with evidence of a CB radio installed in the past, Captain Obvious feels pretty sure a previous owner ran on the interstate and towed some type of 5th wheel.

I've got approx. $15k in the vehicle as it sits. Considering a new one is at least 3 times that, I'm comfortable with that amount. The bone stock 12 valve is not nearly as powerful as the new Cummins diesels (400 lb/ft of torque vs. 1000+) but it will tow anything I need to pull and should outlast me. 1st Gen 5.9 is old school, all mechanical and no DEF. A727 auto is 3 speed (no OD) but also no computer control. Lack of OD hurts MPG, but it's decently strong even with the 3.07 rear end. A727 cheaper to rebuild than OD trans and upgrade options are available to make it stronger than stock.

Recently took it on a 1,100 mile round trip from eastern Tennessee to Outer Banks NC and back, no trailer but a bed full of household goods and kayaks. Ran 70 - 80 down the interstate and avg. 18 mpg, didn't use any oil. Looking to upgrade to 3200 governor spring to get more RPM, but more interested in longevity vs. lb./ft. Overall it's a beast and should outlast this 60 year old man.

Nothing. It just loves gasoline!!!!

It has 154,000 miles.

General Comments:

A superb work truck. I don't think the newer Rams are as good. I'll get a Ford or a Chevy.

Pros:

The truck has tow power and a rock solid transmission. It starts in cold weather and has a solid paint job.

Cons:

This truck has no traction at all with brand new AT tires. I still get stuck in an inch of snow or mud. It won't even go up a grass hill. My 2wd 89 Chevy 1500 V6 5 speed has had to pull it out numerous times, even in situations a Geo Metro would have made it through. It is the only reason I do not drive this truck more than once a month.
