1986 Dodge D50 Gas

Summary:

Very tough and reliable

Faults:

Replaced the transmission, disabled the automatic choke, replaced the fuel tank, and the fuel gauge quit working so I carry a 2 gallon gas can in the storage box in the truck box.

General Comments:

Bought the truck for $50.00 used in 1999, and after the auto choke was disabled and tranny replaced, it just kept running and I still use it now.

Since it is not a 4 wheel drive, I put it in the garage for the winter months (Oct. till April).

1986 Dodge D50 L023P 2.6L

Summary:

I would love it more if I could depend on it to get me from point A to point B without any problems

Faults:

When it runs, it runs strong, but likes to stall. Have had to use the brake like a clutch to keep the truck from dying when turning into traffic. Sometimes it dies anyway. It took 5 1/2 hours to drive 125 miles because it keeps stalling.

It has no headliner, as that had already come down before I bought the truck.

The bench seat is completely deteriorated.

The seal on the back axle leaks as well. There is also a leak with the transmission fluid.

Eats oil.

General Comments:

Would be an awesome truck otherwise. It feels sturdy and would make a great little work truck.

Don't know what the gas mileage is like, as it has been down more than running since I bought the truck.

Only 2000 miles in eight years? This thing really is a "garage queen", eh?

I had a 1983 D50 and it was a great truck.

It did not pass emissions inspection one year, and I replaced the carburetor with a rebuilt, and never had any more problems.

It may be difficult to find a new one these days.

Good luck with it.

1986 Dodge D50 2.6

Summary:

This truck is very dependable

Faults:

The tire rod broke soon after I got it only because I hit a pot hole on a clay road driving pretty fast.

Rear seal in the transfer case went bad at about 159000.

Dash cracking do to the heat in Florida.

Poor speaker mounts.

General Comments:

Very powerful for a 4 cylinder.

Handles awesome for off-road experiences (gotten me out of a lot of mud holes)

Expect to run it another 100,000 miles.

I love everything about this truck and would never trade it for anything in the world (except for a ford)

1986 Dodge D50 Sport 2.6 litre

Summary:

A very very good truck to have

Faults:

Before I owned the truck, the engine blew an oil seal on the highway, lost all of it's oil, and the engine seized. The engine was replaced right before I bought it, and since then the only problems I have had are:

Fuel pump started leaking and had to be replaced. ($30 at local auto parts store, in stock)

Two nuts loosened on the exhaust manifold and the gasket warped. ($14 at the local auto parts store, in stock)

Valve cover gasket started leaking slightly. ($12 at local parts store, in stock)

Auto locking hubs needed to be repacked with grease.

By far the worst problem is the factory carburetor. It caused vapor locking, hard starting, poor fuel economy, and no power. I replaced it with a Weber two barrel carburetor conversion ($400 on-line from Weber) and it made a night and day difference, and corrected all of the problems. The kit was very easy to install, and came with all the parts needed.

General Comments:

This is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. For the most part, it is very reliable and has put up with a lot of abuse without flinching.

It is second vehicle and my daily driver. I use it to haul around Go-karts, dirt bikes and whatever else all the time.

The truck is also surprisingly capable off road, and in bad weather.

What would a 1986 dodge ram 50 be worth.

I am looking to buy already picked it out just need to figure a reasonable price.

You can get an idea of the truck's worth by visiting the Kelly Blue Book website at www.kbb.com. Choose the used car option, with the private party resale value. $200 if beat, maybe up to $600 if decent. Surely under $1,000 though.

Which Weber Carb. did you use? I have a 2.6 liter 4x4.

Between 1000 and 3400.

I thank the high on a Dodge D50 base truck is around 5,200. The low price is probably around 1,500. Middle price around 3500. That's my guess.
