1999 Dodge Dakota 5.2L V8

Faults:

I would start the truck early in the morning; sometimes after warming it up I would drive off and you could hear like a lot of air somewhere in the transmission I'll say.

I always knew that was not normal, but I still drove it like that for about a year and 3 months; I would just make sure to warm it up because for some reason that would avoid the noise.

My transmission went out after owning this pickup truck for quite some time. I use this bad boy as a commercial truck, carrying metal fences and gates, therefore it carries lots of weight. Not once did it leave me stranded, therefore I will be rebuilding my transmission; anything for my bad boy.

It all started with the check engine light coming on; the code was p1756, which is the governor pressure sensor and the solenoid sensor, which are inside the transmission. I paid for the sensors to be replaced, but for some reason the truck felt the same and the light came on again... I kept it park for about 4 days, and when I moved it for the street sweeper to pass, I noticed that when I put it in "P" to park, it was still rolling.

In order for me park, I literally had to press the emergency brake and turn it off. Now it wouldn't turn on basically it was still in Drive.

General Comments:

Good reliable truck.

Yes I will be rebuilding my transmission.

This is my first Dodge pickup.

It's been loyal to me; I gotta be loyal back.

My keeper.

1999 Dodge Dakota 3.9

Summary:

Acceptable, but with flaws that seem to not be addressed

Faults:

The rear brakes stopped working on both the Dakotas I have owned; I think this should be a recall item because of the safety issue.

I have had power steering leaks with both Dakotas and electrical issues.

The seats are comfortable, and the vehicle drives well and gets acceptable gas mileage.

1999 Dodge Dakota SLT V6 Magnum

Summary:

Satisfiied second owner. Paid $5000 in 09

Faults:

Front end suspension parts wore out at low mileage (64,000).

At the time of purchase, the ball joints were worn out and had to be replaced (common, no lube fittings on king pin/ball joints at time of manufacture).

Noise from the engine belt tension/idler. Squalling of belt under AC load at times (ghost in the machine. No clear solution for belt/pulley hardware issues).

Best mileage achieved at 42-46 mph. Great for city. Poor for highway commutes.

Paint issues on roof and fenders (clear coat peals).

Power.

General Comments:

Ride and handling are outstanding. Cornering and brakes remarkable. Comfortable and user friendly cab with very nice audio package. V6 power train is a good compromise between power and fuel economy.

Small issues with engine belts and fuel economy, counter balanced with ride comfort and road hugging agility.

No major complaints for the 99 truck, however heard the brakes for same year Durango are a bit frighting.

Once my problems with front end suspension were handled at the time of purchase (used) from a dealer, no major issues noted. I live in a very hot climate; A/C compressor is on its way to replacement.

Power window on the driver's side wears out in regards to plastic track wheels used.

1999 Dodge Dakota SLT 3.9L

Summary:

Very nice

Faults:

Burns oil, have to add a quart once in about 6 weeks.

General Comments:

Great truck! Granted I only owned it since June 5th, 2010, but it runs great, is very comfy, has plenty of power to go up hills in higher gear.

Now there is no way of telling how the previous owner took care of it, but I got it for $2600, and so far I replaced:

Two tires

Oil/Filter

Tranny oil

Rear wing light

As you can see, these are just regular maintenance things to replace.

Overall, I would recommend it to anyone, and it lasts, especially with double clutching and easy driving. Well it lasts if ya don't drive like Ricky Bobby :P.
