1999 Dodge Durango 5.2 liter magnum

Summary:

Nice looking, but keep check on your oil pressure!!!

Faults:

The check gage light came on and it lost all oil pressure. I took it to the shop and they replaced the oil sending unit. It did the same thing as soon as I got it home from the shop and then I took it to the Dodge dealership and they put on an oil pump and screen.

I also had to replace the front right ball-joint at about 60000 miles.

General Comments:

I love my vehicle, but it's worrying me about all of this talk of oil pumps and screens and being very sensitive. You can very easily blow an engine. This really concerns me. Maybe they need to check into this with Dodge Durangos. They say they accumulate sludge in the engine and the screens clog easily. This happened to us and we just spent 800.00 last week. I don't want to have to put a new engine in it, also.

1999 Dodge Durango SLT 5.2L V8

Summary:

As expected

Faults:

Minor problems. Lot's of fit and finish issues with the interior. Wind noise has increased as door seals have deteriorated. Increasing squeaks and rattles. The R&D side of many components seems minimal and the quality of most materials seems poor. Mechanically, the vehicle has been great.

General Comments:

After driving the vehicle since purchasing it along with my wife's Toyota, I see where the extra money spent on R&D goes. Sure, the Dodge wins hands down in interior comfort and power, but when you compare the overall condition of the two vehicles at almost identical mileages and ages you see the real picture. The dodge has suffered from loss of ride quality and has aged at an incredible rate when the two vehicles are compared. I would buy another, however, I am also willing to admit that most American cars need constant attention to be in perfect running condition.

1999 Dodge Durango SLT 5.9 Liter V8

Summary:

Love the truck and would buy another

Faults:

Rear brake sensor went bad at 72,000 miles. Brake light and ABS light came on and would not go out.

General Comments:

I really love my Durango. I had a ford Taurus before and I needed more room for the family. I test drove the Explorer, and Expo and I liked the Durango more. It was small enough for my wife to drive, but big enough to haul the family and anything else I want to haul.

It does drink fuel though. I have found that the way you drive the truck will also help or hinder fuel consumption. I use my cruise control a lot on the highway and I don't drive to fast. Keep the oil filter changed, as well as the air filer. I also change my oil every 3000 miles with the synthetic blend oil from castrol.

I have the same problem. My ABS and Brake light came on several months ago and I cannot get it to go away. It came on when I was on the highway and put on the cruise control. I have no idea what the problem is. The check engine light is also on and won't go away. My mechanic could not figure out the problem. I enjoy driving the car because it looks cool. But that's it!

When I took my Durango to where I purchased it, the dealer service dept found out that one of the rear sensors went bad and it needed replaced. Parts and Labor $124.00. Other than that, I have had no problems at all. You may want to have them check the rear sensor if they did not already. As for the engine light I don't know what that could be. It seems that there are many people on this site that could have ideas on that. I am amazed at all the complaints for the 1999 Durango and if I would have found this sight before purchasing it, I would have thought again.

So far I have had no problems to date, and hope that I won't have any, but I will purchase an extended warranty just in case. I also love the look and would purchase maybe a 2003 Durango if this one blows up on me. I have not heard as many problems about that year and they still have that look that I like a lot. Good luck with your "D"!

I really love my '99 Durango. As a matter of fact I also own A 2000 Durango. I am a lot harder on my '99 and it has held up very well. I hunt, so my 4x4's have to be tough. Other than having to back up to engage and disengage the transfer, I've never had real problems. I've pounded through mud holes that would punish most Chevys and fords. My Durango never let me down. I'm pushing 100,000 miles and she is still strong. I will more than likely just replace the engine and trans when the time comes. Like I said "I love my Durango".
