1996 Dodge Intrepid

Summary:

Good design, built with inferior materials/workmanship

Faults:

At 60,000 miles had to replace the front rotors/brakes, power steering pump, water pump and front main seal ($1200 total).

Radiator fan now malfunctioning (on all the time).

General Comments:

Worst fears about Dodge are now being realized. Next car will be a Volvo.

So much for Detroit turning things around.

1996 Dodge Intrepid Base 4-dr sedan 3.3 V6

Summary:

A nice-size sedan that is unreliable, poorly built, and not backed by the manufacturer

Faults:

A/C failed, and was replaced only after I called Chrysler headquarters in Detroit (dealer wanted $1400 to fix it, but Chrysler replaced it after I researched the problems on the Internet and could document faulty design). Transmission went out at 65,000 miles, and was quoted $1700 to replace (took it to a mechanic who repaired for $400).

General Comments:

Lots of other minor breakdowns and poor experiences with dealers for repairs/service have led me to list the vehicle for sale, and decide to never buy Dodge again.

I want more information on how to deal with Chrysler on all the problems we're having with our 1994 Dodge Intrepid - - transmission replaced, air conditioner not working; water pump replaced; sensors replaced, driver seat back broken. These problems all started when the car had low mileage and it's a garage kept, one owner car.

1996 Dodge Intrepid Standard 3.5

Faults:

Dodge did a fuel rail recall, otherwise standard maintainence, except when my son got hit while sitting at a light. Again repairs were quickly accomplished.

General Comments:

The driver's seat become very uncomfortable after several hours in the saddle. It's too hard or the angle is wrong or something.

1996 Dodge Intrepid 3.5 V-6

Faults:

Transmission rebuild @ 55,000.

Problems with front brakes disc noise.

Front suspension alignment keeps misaligning.

General Comments:

Other than the normal stuff that breaks because of hard driving, it's a great car. I just wish they would make it a rear wheel drive to balance the weight. Front end steering leads because of too much weight in the front. I wish they could incorporate the Prowler setup into the new Intrepid. I would spend the extra $3,000!
