1997 Dodge Intrepid Sedan 3.5Lt V6

Summary:

It's a Great Inexpensive car to have

Faults:

Well the only major problem that I had was the Timing Belt. At first I thought it was that the engine blew, but I had a friend check it out and found that all it was was the Timing Belt. The A/C also went out, but that was not a major problem that I had and the cruise control stopped working, but when it did work it worked perfect.

General Comments:

This car handles great.

Has get up and go.

Did great on mileage.

Overall it's a great car to have and the fog lights helped a lot with driving.

1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5

Summary:

Fun to drive, needs better quality

Faults:

Sway bars were clunking right when I bought the car.

Rotors had to be resurfaced.

Water pump/timing belt had to be changed after 1500 miles from buying the car. Needed new battery and transmission flush.

General Comments:

Very nice car. I wanted a Dodge Intrepid and got a good deal on a '97. Car needed new brakes at the dealership, when I picked up the car, drove it on the highway and hit the brakes the car shuttered. It needed the rotors resurfaced. Also sway bars were clunking on both wheels. These were replaced under warranty. 3.5 litre V6 has unbelievable power!! Water pump and timing belt had to be replaced, quoted by a Dodge dealership at $700. It however was also covered under warranty. Overall no major issues. I sold the car to an exchange student because I got my Pontiac Grand AM back. He put a new belt tensioner in it and new brakes. He has already put 2000 miles over the past 2 months and loves the car!!

1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5

Summary:

I love my car!

Faults:

My two biggest problems have been all four of the struts breaking and gas leaking from around one of the fuel injectors. The problem was hard to locate, but was fairly simple to fix and my husband did it himself.

General Comments:

This car moves when you hit the gas!

The interior is very roomy and comfortable and still looks great.

This is the first car I have owned that has been completely reliable in every way.

1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.5 6 cylinder

Summary:

Fast car runs great

Faults:

Black paint is very dull and peeling off.

Replaced thermostat several times due to being stuck and causing overheating.

When changing spark plugs the long rubber boots pulled apart and had to dig out the pieces and then replace wires.

Cigar lighter came apart and I can no longer charge my cell phone.

Seats are not comfortable.

Paint on hood and roof got so thin I had to get re painted.

Plastic headlight covers got so dull that couldn't see properly at night so had them replaced.. Why not make them of glass?

Heat has caused passenger air bag cover to come loose and sticking up.

The speakers only work in front and are very rattlly. rear speaker on right comes on at times then off.

Left rear electric door lock will not work. Have to lock it manually.

Plastic cup holder is broke and no longer useful as it falls all the way down on seat.

Left turn signal pig tail where bulb plus in is shot..

Paint on hubcaps has peeled off..

Rubber molding on right rear door has come loose and hanging. no longer seals.

Head/fog light switch came off in my hand.

1997 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.5L 24 Valve

Summary:

Fast car, but good luck stopping!

Faults:

I can't keep the car in alignment!! The brakes SUCK!! It seems like every time I get out of the car the front brakes are smoking. The dealer says there is nothing wrong, but there has to be! The car had tie rod end, ball joints and alignment done under the warranty (thank god). Paint is chipping from the front bumper and A pillars.

General Comments:

This is a fast car. It may be a 4dr sedan, but it can move. You can go 100mph in this car and not realize it!

I have had my Intrepid for many years now. The only things I have had to have done on it is routine maintenance; tires, oil changes, brakes. (My brakes are excellent) My car has guts. I never have to wait for a 100 acre cornfield to pull out, and still worry if I am going to make it safely onto the road. (I, however, do not think I am invincible. One has to be wise) It has plenty of space in the front, and back seats for adults, yet it is not a huge car. I love how it handles too.

In conclusion, I will not give up my intrepid until it's on it's last leg. Then, I will buy another Intrepid.

Front brakes smoking on an old car is usually (not always) an indication of worn brake calipers starting to lock up. If you have good brake pads and see this happening, watch out. When even one caliper is doing this, all should be replaced along with new rotors, or at least resurfaced rotors.

I agree with you 100%. I own a '97 Intrepid ES with the 3.5 Engine and it's very fast. I love the car, but the brakes are horrible! Every time I get in the car there is something wrong with the brakes. I guess every car has its faults.

I had the brakes ripped out and replaced. You really, really need to do this. It makes a world of difference. I can stop on a dime at 60mph now whereas I used to cling to the steering wheel screaming like a little girl.
