1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 Liter SOHC

Summary:

A disappointing buy

Faults:

When I bought the car it needed an alignment. They fixed it, but the car was still shaking. I fixed that with new tires. Cost: $140 for 2.

The car started to blow the blue smoke of death which means the piston rings are shot. I took it to my regular mechanic and he confirmed along with one other mechanic. The dealership denied it and just did an oil change.

At the same time I saw a leak the color of pink under the front of the hood on a bolt. I was told it was nothing to worry about. I have not proceeded with a repair although I have been told by three different mechanics it wasn't right.

The car was burning 1 to 2 quarts of oil every one thousand miles. I took it back and they replaced the PVC valve and vent hose that had collapsed. Cost $100.

Three months later, they had to replace the motor under warranty for bad piston rings.

Transmission is starting to act up.

General Comments:

Like everyone else says, the car is roomy and quite comfortable, but under the hood is not that great. In my case, the previous owner did not take care of the car, i.e., oil changes. I also had other problems like the door panel fell off for no reason, the turn signal 'wigged out', and the trunk light still does not work.

When you buy a used car you buy other peoples problems.

Also, the car should have wider tires for handling curves.

1999 Dodge Intrepid V6 ..... 2.7L

Summary:

Over all it is a very good running car

Faults:

I have a 1999 Dodge Intrepid and the other day it overheated, but I have no signs of leaks anywhere! But when I turn my heater or air on then turn it off I hear clicking. The day that it overheated I was running my air and it smelled like burned electric wires and then it started to over heat. but it doesn't do it real fast I can drive it a while, but I can smell antifreeze and I have checked everywhere for leaks and found none! What could the problem be? Thanks Jennifer Wilson

1999 Dodge Intrepid EX

Summary:

A big ripoff!

Faults:

My transmission went out after 1 year of owning the car.

Sometimes windows would not roll up and down.

General Comments:

The car is very big in the inside, but is not a reliable and dependable source of transportation.

The trade in value is very low, even if the car is kept in excellent condition.

1999 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L

Summary:

This is a fun car to drive with plenty of room for everyone

Faults:

When I first got the car, the check engine light went on almost immediately. I noticed that the transmission was stuck in what they call "fail safe mode." I took it back to the dealer and they replaced a sensor at no charge.

At about 122,000 miles I had to replace the engine cooling fan. It was replaced free of charge by the dealer.

At about 130,000 miles, the engine failed. It costed me $2900 dollars to replace the engine with a "junked engine" from another Intrepid.

Other than that, I am very satisfied with the car. So far, I haven't had any more problems with the car. With a little care, I'll get a lot more mileage out of it.

1999 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.2L EFI

Summary:

Great ride, roomy family sedan, but lousy reliability and dodgy (no pun intended) service excuses

Faults:

Speed sensor failure at 55,000 miles.

Electric window motor failure twice.

Excessive rack and pinion play and hard turning starting at 65,000 miles.

A/C condenser failure at 53,000 miles.

Climate control head (control panel) at 53,000 miles.

General Comments:

If only this car was as reliable as a Honda or Toyota! Really nice ride, no complaints. But...

The biggest problem was the rack and pinion. Definite resistance felt in left turn, got much worse to where I had to wrestle the wheel for a full left turn. Also lots of slop. Dealer shrugged his shoulders, saying, "Never heard of this before. It's news to me." HAH! Wanted $800 for a new unit, got one from a salvage yard for $80. Still had to pay $200+ in labor.

Then had the A/C problem. At same time the readout on the control head was out so dealer stated that it had to be replaced for $400 before they could even work on A/C. Again, got a unit from a salvage yard for $60, swapped the LED panel into my original unit, put it back together and worked fine. That's right. A burned out LED would have set me back $400! My cost: $60 plus three hours of my time.

Lastly, this fan motor baloney. Because a single motor burns out I have to replace the entire assembly for $500 not including labor! Ridiculous! Sure, motors burn out. So replace them. But replace the whole assembly, plastic, fans and all?! For $500!?!?

Am fixing this, selling the car and looking for at Toyota, Lexus, Honda or Acura.

Wow. I'm at 76,000 miles and I just heard that replacing my failed Intrepid window motors will cost me $700. I did a quick Google search to see if anyone else has had this problem and found this site.

How true!

My speed sensor went out at 55,000 miles, too, and the window problem just cropped up. Also, the struts that hold up the trunk when it's open no longer work and I run the risk of getting brained every time I have it open.

Oh yeah, the service guy said 'What do you expect.. the car is 5 years old'. Never had these problems with my Honda which is over 10 years old and has over 100,000 miles. Think I should have stuck with Honda or Toyota.
