1999 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7 DOHC

Summary:

Stylin, reliable, and been very good to me

Faults:

When I first bought it a coolant leak, but replaced under warranty. After I did the brakes at 65000 I noticed a battery cable was worn through due to the steering arm. I couldn't tell if it was a manufacturing problem or if the installer of my amp let the wire fall. Had small problems, but after I had the alarm and stereo put in. they were mostly electrical. if you get work done to one of these make sure you get a warranty on the work. I bought an extended warranty till 75,000 miles from the dealer, but the small print said $100 co pay for every visit and most parts aren't covered after 30000-50000 miles because they are considered wear and tear. the warranty costed $1500 and I think I never got to use it. Luckily not a lot went wrong. the dodge emblem on the hood came off while washing it at 60000. transmission leak, but fixed after I changed the gasket. oil leak, but it was due to a stripped bolt. the aluminum oil pan strips out if you tighten the bolt too much.

General Comments:

I think it was a great car for the price. I have to warn everyone about the small print on the warranties. have a lawyer look it over first!!!j/k. I still have a couple years to pay on it so I hope it lasts. keep the car stock because you will have electrical probs. could be faster, but it has a small engine for such a big car. big big roomy car!!! the trunk almsost seems sound proof. I like it loud and only for me to hear not the whole world. plus cops never think its 420 in this car and tinted windows help a lot.

In the interest of saving you a ton of grief in the future, LOSE THAT CAR IMMEDIATELY the 2.7 engine is complete junk and rarely lasts more than 100,000. The engine gets so plugged with sludge then eventually dies. I've lost count how many of these cars I've seen blowing smoke out the tail pipe.

Summary:

Nicest car for the money!

Faults:

I broke the bolts that hold the drivers seat upright. Got the parts from a junkyard. Cost me $5.00 to fix. Ignition module needed to be replaced. Cost with labor $90.00 Had to have front brake pads replaced at inspection time. Pads, I was told were original (47,500 miles) Replaced with Raybesto's pads. Cost with labor- $85.00.

General Comments:

This has been a fantastic car. People think it is a new car. It is almost 4 years old. Great comfort, ride, handling, room (I'm 6'4"), styling. Decent stereo (infinity) ;there are better factory systems out there. Overall, this has been the best car I have owned.

I own a 1999 Intrepid ES and am disappointed to see some bad reviews. It has been a wonderful car since I bought it used about a year ago. All I have had to do is get the brake pads replaced, front and rear. The car is at about 57,000 miles now, 15,000 in my care. I wanted to comment that the problem mentioned with the driver's seat bolts caused a recent recall which was taken care of at no charge of course. I've gotten everything I wanted and better from this car as I never have demanded much of a smooth ride from a car. Plus being as how the ES especially has a more of a sports suspension, I expected some jitters and shakes from the get go.

I purchased a 1999 Dodge Intrepid ES new in Sept of 1999. It is a little over six years old and has 65k miles on it. The car still looks great and is a pleasure to drive. The engine is smooth quiet and very powerful. In an equal mix of city/hwy. driving I usually average 24 mpg. It never goes below 20 mpg and I have run it on the highway at 28-30 mpg on long trips at 72-75 mph. The only out of warranty work that I had done was to replace a transmission sensor and a defective front wheel bearing for about $450 total at a Chrysler Dealer. I replaced the F/R brakes this year. Front rotors were warped, but none of the pads needed replacing. I have also replaced the serpentine belt, spark plugs and trans fluid. Not bad for over 60k miles. I hope that it goes another six years and 60k miles. Love the ride, the gas mileage, and if you want to go it has 225 HP and auto stick.
