2000 Dodge Intrepid Base 2.7L V6

Summary:

Very Reliable with 137,000 miles!

Faults:

Power door locks froze on driver side front and rear doors.

Brake light switch failure.

Replaced shocks/struts.

Trunk light has a kink in the wire, and sometimes doesn't light when trunk fully open.

General Comments:

This car is very comfortable, and super roomy. I have put almost 100,000 highway miles on this car in the last 6 years, and it is still running strong. The transmission is sluggish off the line unless you floor it. Passing power is pretty good... better with a K&N air filter. Overall, the most reliable car I've owned.

I have 118,000 miles on my 2000 Intrepid (2.7L) and have started to have the types of engine problems that almost every other owner of this car have had in varying degrees: engine light on, constant stalling, lack of acceleration. I hope to nurse this car to 160,000 miles with synthetic oil changes every 2000 miles. I urge you to use synthetic oil (Mobil One is best) if you are not already. Otherwise, your 2.7L motor will sludge up and fail despite its 137K miles. Also, once you switch to synthetic you should never switch back to regular oil. Good luck with your Intrepid. It looks like you got a better than average one.

2000 Dodge Intrepid SE 2.7

Summary:

It's a piece of junk

Faults:

Engine went down, timing chain jumped 180 degrees out of time.

General Comments:

We bought this 2000 Chrysler Intrepid in 2001. It seemed to be a very good car. It was fast, drove good, rode good, handled very good.

Until the engine went down in it.

We searched all over the place for a motor, and found one in Texas. A place there sells them, and all types of re-manufactured engines. We spent about $7000.00 on the engine and the labor, plus other new parts to get it back on the road. We are still buying parts to keep it on the road, and only have approx. 2000 miles on the new engine.

2000 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.2

Summary:

Best car Dodge ever built

Faults:

AC leaks freon causing a vacuum leak type sound in the dash heater control area.

Door seals are beginning to shrink and separate causing wind noise.

OEM brake rotors are too thin and need replacing after first lining change, NAPA has great replacements in the $30 some dollar range for each.

Headlight have to be polished after 3yrs to keep them clear, polishing compound works great.

General Comments:

Best car I've ever owned mechanically as well as general performance, over 30 miles to the gal using all synthetic lubricants. Very reliable, it still has the original battery after six years. I still get compliments on how smooth it rides and for a 5 passenger car it handles good as well. Can't figure Dodge out in stopping this model, I think it looks better than the charger.

2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L

Summary:

Great value - very reliable

Faults:

The car had an early water pump problem (around 60,000 miles).

The weather stripping around the door was not fit properly from the outset, but I never had it repaired. This causes some issues in trying to maintain cabin comfort.

The headlamps fogged inside even they are supposedly sealed. This has degraded the visibility somewhat.

General Comments:

This car is outstanding for its price range (purchased new for around $19,000).

I have put over 185,000 miles on it with no major repairs. During that time I have monitored gas mileage and it has remained at or near 29 MPG (highway) for the life of the vehicle.

I started using a bit of oil at around 120,000, but nothing serious.

The interior has held up well, but was never very glamorous to begin with.

The power is substandard, but it cruises well at higher speeds.

If you are seeking a good value and you are the type of person who thinks of a car as an appliance, not an investment or status symbol, then this vehicle fits the bill very well.
