2001 Dodge Intrepid SE 3.5

Summary:

3 year life span

Faults:

At 65000 miles, my drive chain snapped and took my engine along for the ride, smashing pistons and tearing apart my valves. Needless to say, the only hope is a new engine, but I'd rather buy a new car than drop $6000 into that piece of junk.

The seals on the back doors, both sides, came off. The driver's side door stopped opening from the inside. I can only open my door from the outside through the window, which stopped working right before she bit it.

General Comments:

The point is, why have an American car with a Mitsubishi motor, when you can buy a Mitsubishi that was installed by the people who made it.

The next Dodge I'll by is a Viper, and I'll never buy a Viper.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

I have had my Intrepid for 3 years now and have had minimal problems so far. Only brakes and the water pump needed to be replaced. Now I have passed the 90,000 mile mark and my check engine light is on, which I see from everyone else is normal around that mileage. I have put approx. 20,000 highway miles on it and it really hasn't been that bad. I may feel differently if I find out that the check engine light is due to the infamous 'sludge'!

Once again, this engine is NOT a Mitsubishi engine.

Chrysler has used Mitsubishi engines in the past (the 3.0L V6 commonly found in LeBarons and New Yorkers in the late 1980s and early 1990s), but this 2.7L V6 is an all-Chrysler design.

It was designed by Chrysler on its computer CAD system and is assembled by Chrysler at its US engine plant.

It's quite unfair to blame Mitsubishi for Chrysler's poor engineering and unwillingness to stand behind this terrible engine.

I drive a Dodge Intrepid 2.7L. It has been an amazing car. It has 183,000 miles on it and it has been running like a charm. I have driven the heck out of this car and it has only caused me one problem - a sensor in the transmission went out but it was a cheap fix ($400.00) considering that I have had the car for 5 years (I bought it used) and have not had any issues other than that. It has been an amazing car and I am looking into buying another one.

2001 Dodge Intrepid RT 3.5 HO

Summary:

Mid-Life Crisis Super Mobile :-)

Faults:

The car has been flawless. I have replaced the intake to increase airflow to the engine. I had the engine blueprinted and had the exhaust replaced. The result is 278 HP. If I shut off the traction control, put it in 1st gear with the slap-stick and hammer it, I can stay in one place for 30 seconds with the front tires spinning. Only problem I could find was a touch of bubbling of the paint on the hood and a little chipping (peeling) of the front bumper paint which was covered by the manufacturer.

General Comments:

The car set up the way it is right now, I would have to consider it an "IMPORT KILLER."

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Hey man, I was reading your comments. I have a simmilar set-up in mine, but I'm only hitting 265hp. Great car though, 2nd one I have owned.

General Comments:

I cannot see myself purchasing another Dodge until the engine reliability is fixed.Please foward info on class action suit.

The timing chain on my 2001 Dodge Intrepid went out @ 52,000 miles causing engine damage. Never will I buy another dodge.

My engine froze at 78,000 miles. What a piece of garbage. Just bought a new Accord EX V6, what a difference.

Well, news has it that my husband's 2001 Dodge Intrepid has had the timing chain go as well. We now have a $6,000 bill on a car with 62,000 miles on it and the car is not even paid off. I feel that Dodge should be responsible for replacement. I had the timing belt go in my car which was a $600.00 repair with 90,000 miles on my car (ford) and now it is in great working order. Why, oh why, would a manufacturer produce a product in which when parts break (which they can and do) would destroy an entire engine? I feel this is greatly irresponsible on the part of Dodge/Chrysler/Mitsubishi for putting consumers in this position. My husband loved his car. Not anymore, or the above mentioned manufacturers.

I bought a 2001 Intrepid with 75k on it. At 90k the engine seized up and I had to spend $4500 to get a used one. That engine came with a one year warranty, but unfortunately it is now 14 months later and the exact same thing has happened again. It is a good looking car and drives nice when it actually runs, but personally I will never own another Dodge in my lifetime. Please give me the site for the lawsuit. Bsmith@kirkwoodmortgage.com.

I bought my first new car in 2001 a Dodge Intrepid it was my dream which is now my nightmare-engine went out -cost me between $2,500-$5,000- to get another one or rebuild-of course how can I pay this when now I to catch rides to work or rent a car. I live in Georgia and work in South Carolina.

Don't blame this on Mitsubishi. The 2.7 liter engine is all Chrysler -- it was designed by Chrysler in Auburn Hills and is assembled by Chrysler at its US engine manufacturing plant.

Have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with 87k on it and the engine blew. It's a 2.7 and it's looking to cost me about $3500 for a long block rebuilt. Anyone that can shed some light? welch.j@mchsi.com. Thanks!

Maybe it's time to pull the plug. The car is 7 years old with 87,000 miles. Rather than throw $3,500 away on a car that was just a couple steps away from becoming an old beater even if it were running, why not take the same $3,500 and get a decent used car? Find something with a good reputation, but cheap.
