2002 Dodge Intrepid 2.7

Summary:

Money pit, no confidence

Faults:

The first problem was a water pump. The water pump is encased in the engine. Stupid design idea. Cost to repair $1300. No the engine light is on constantly. Most recently the oil light is on. Replaced oil sending unit.. no help. Not sure what it is causing problem. Oil light goes off at 2000 rpm and on as soon as it goes below that mark. Repair shop says it is an oil pressure problem.

Almost for certain as with all Dodges and Chryslers the transmission is next. Please add to any class action the car design sucks. We are trading ASAP/

2002 Dodge Intrepid SE

Summary:

I wish I had left it on the lot!

Faults:

The check engine light came on 2 days after my 30 day warranty.

It would stay on for a couple of weeks and go off.

Then I would look up again and it would come back on.

Finally the transmission went out at 95,000 miles and come to find out, that was the reason for the engine light going on and off.

It cost me 18,338 to get the transmission rebuilt.

I am still paying for the car.

Then two weeks later the wheel bearing on the driver side brakes that was $287.00.

Three weeks before the transmission went out I had to get a complete brake job that cost me almost $500.00.

Now the check engine light has come back on for three weeks now. I give up!

The next car I get will be GM or Toyota.

General Comments:

I should of known better than to buy the car when the VIN wouldn't go through for the insurance and tag.

Come to find out the car was from Canada and Chrysler is the maker Dodge.

All 2nd Gen Dodge Intrepids were built in Canada at the Brampton, Ontario facility. Now, my friend, if you are only just finding out that Dodge is a Chrysler-owned brand then I really wonder if you should have bought the car in the first place. A motor vehicle is too big a purchase, and too dangerous a tool, to be taken as slight as buying a toaster. Now let me get this straight. The check-engine light comes on and you don't go to Pep Boys and get it checked out and consequently your transmission fails. You replace the transmission and now you have yet another check-engine light and you STILL have not gotten it checked out? My advice: buy a bicycle.

It cost you $18,000 to rebuilt the tranny? What was it out of? A Ferrari?

Speaking as an owner of a Chrysler Intrepid ES (3.5L HO, 99,000 kms) I can tell you the story is suspicious.

My car has NEVER popped a check engine codes, I have a custom exhaust on it and I don't hesitate to push it to redline on a daily basis, as it can be a fun car to drive.

People fail to understand that a car requires gas and MAINTENANCE!!! That means changing your oil, servicing your belts, checking into weird noises from the engine bay, etc.

I have just done routine maintenance, and I'm a student so I'm no expert, I did it all myself and saved a ton of cash, and my car runs great, no problems whatsoever and I would recommend an intrepid to anyone. Keep in mind I bought mine brand new, and I know everything that has been done to the car. You don't know the full history of the car, so any abuse from before translates into your problems now.

I have seen Intrepids and 300ms (same body and engine/trans) run up to and over 300,000 miles, they call it the 300M club.
