1996 Dodge Neon Highline 2.0 liter SOCH

Summary:

An OK small car built by Chrysler

Faults:

Head gasket at 26000 miles.

Power locks went bad and we never replaced them, just use the key instead.

Cracked head on the engine replaced around 70000.

New fuel pump at 78000.

Struts and shocks on rear replaced around 80000 miles.

New gas tank and fuel lines around 82000 miles.

Driver`s side front seat is ripped, even though both front seats have covers over them.

Power windows work when they feel like it.

General Comments:

This little two door sports coupe is good looking, and has much power under the hood for a four cylinder engine.

Pretty good gas mileage; somewhere around 25 miles per gallon or more on the highway.

Handles well when driving anywhere. A great cruising car.

Lots of luxury touches such as power windows, power locks, power steering, air conditioning, and cruise control.

1996 Dodge Neon 2.0 SOHC

Summary:

Great, cheap, fun little car, only lacking a more exciting interior!

Faults:

Clutch, transmission, engine, and struts replaced.

General Comments:

Well, the short of it is, this is the only car that I have ever seen/heard of capable of 40mpg on the highway while being able to out run early 90's Camaros and Mustangs powered by V-8's and newer Civics, Cavaliers, Cobalts, and MUCH more, while being roomier than every comparable model car and being rather cheap and easy to maintain. It handle like a dream for what it is, and has tons of room! (I am 6'6 and fit fine in the drivers seat, and with a little squeeze can comfortably ride for an hour or two in the back) It has a rather spacious trunk to boot! The major repairs that I have done have never cost more than $500, granted we (my father and I) did them our selves. The only things the worst critics should have to complian about is a plain, utilitarian interior, and a stiff, yet sporty, ride. None the less, I hold it as the best econo-box built to date!

I agree, I Bought a 97 Neon as a second car to save on gas. I normally Drive an Intrepid, but I do mostly highway driving, and this car easily gets 35mpg, and when gas is at $4.04/gal, this is great! I was actually surprised by the power that this car has. I do have an automatic, but this car is quick! It really feels much like the 3.2 V6 that I have in the Intrepid. I have had mine for about a year now, and it has 178000 miles on it, and I've only done normal maintenance. Great little car.

1996 Dodge Neon base 2.0L SOHC

Summary:

Wouldn't recommended to anyone unless you take really good care of it and you have a good budget

Faults:

When I first bought the car I was the fifth owner. I just needed a car badly because I had totaled my Honda Prelude, so I thought I would get away with a Neon, but I was wrong for the year I that owned it. I had to change the timing belt, oil pan, the starter, and alternator.

General Comments:

The only thing positive is that it's a pretty quick car, smooth ride and is cheap on gas. Other than that it only burns your money.

1996 Dodge Neon Sport 2.0 I4

Summary:

Gets you from point A to B miraculously!

Faults:

Since the first day of purchase, engine check light was on.

The speedometer only worked for the first 9 kilometers of ownership.

The power locks do not work at all.

Needed a new alternator.

Gas and engine temperature monitor stopped working.

Indicator lights come on when I hit the brakes.

Vehicle beeps for no reason due to a glitch.

Acceleration from day one is slower then all other Neon's.

Horrendous engine thirst.

Bass on radio makes cracking noises.

Had to bribe to make it pass the emissions test.

Paint peeling and too much rust.

General Comments:

This car is a miracle. Most Neon's are known to only last until 120 000 kilometers the MAX. When purchasing the vehicle, the previous owner stated that the engine was rebuilt. Previous owner did not change the oil or put engine coolant.
