1996 Dodge Neon Highline 2.0 liter

Summary:

What a worthless car!

Faults:

Head gasket.

Dash electronics.

Sometimes will not start.

Loud engine.

Turn signals went out.

General Comments:

My girlfriend bought this car even though I told her DO NOT buy a Chrylser product. I told her to buy a Honda. But she bought the car and what a pile of crap! It's put together cheaply, things rattle, sometimes things don't work, then the next day they will. I can't believe Chrysler put a three speed automatic in this car also! She's now waiting for the tranny to go out, since there is a problem with that too. She now regrets buying anything from this company. When trying to trade, no dealership even wants the car. We took it to a Honda dealership and they just about laughed at us! I think she learned her lesson and if she can dump it cheap, she will and buy Japanese.

Well, I couldn't agree more. I have a '96 and so far I replaced the head gasket (under warranty) and 2 PCMs (thank God under warranty) BUT I'm stuck with the on and off speedometer. (Not covered of course) Now I have to replace the instrument panel cause the other gauges go nutty too. The brakes squeak and whole car is a big pain in my side. I really got a dud. Good luck, if you're smart you'll set on fire and roast marshmallows on it.

1996 Dodge Neon Coupe 2.0 SOHC

Summary:

If you need economy this is the car for you

Faults:

Numerous problems, including passenger door falling off. Brakes squealing, sun visor falling off, clicking noise under hood, cam sensor leaking oil ALL OVER the garage floor, locks freezing even when it is just 32 degrees.

Dealer thought I was out of my mind every time I brought it back and even accused me of being in an accident and told me "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!" I will never buy a new Chrysler again, just for that comment. But, I am considering a used 1994 Jeep : )

General Comments:

But, over all, the longer I had it, the less problems it had.

1996 Dodge Neon Base Sedan 2.0 gasoline

Faults:

It eats motor mounts, but that's due to the engine's torque exceeding the engineers' expectations. This was never truly remedied, though mounts have been replaced and worn out again. At 54,000 miles, a clogged EGR valve set off the check engine light - cleaning and reinstall cured this. Other than that, the car's been bulletproof reliable.

General Comments:

Fun to drive (more than anything else under $20k), economical, fun to drive, cheap to insure, fun to drive, roomy, cute, did I mention it's a lot of fun to drive?

1996 Dodge Neon 2.2 gas sohc

Faults:

At about 47000 miles the camshaft oil seal ruptured, leaking oil (actually spraying oil over the inside cam cover), this covered the cam belt making it necessary to change the belt early. Cost for the belt and seal was about $400.00

General Comments:

This car was bought for basic transportation, std transmission, basic interior (showing a little more wear then I think it should), gets good gas mileage about 37 to 38. Has decent performance, but could have better handling.
