Faults:

Manifold gasket leak.

Transmission slip x2. Found common resolution.

A/C system failure x2.

Quadcab door latches stuck.

Hood bounce at 75mph, latch feels secure but still questionable.

Front end issues continue...

Paint peel.

Leather seat wear.

Cupholder repair.

Interior electrical system failure.

General Comments:

I have a 1999 QC 1500 Sport 5.9L/360 now with 200k + miles. Bought at 14,000 miles in 2000 in Texas.

The transmission 'failed' at 18,000, under warranty so the dealer 'rebuilt' it, couldn't even get it home out of second gear. I went straight back to the dealer who replaced the transmission solenoids, and 1 hour later - FIXED! Doubt it needed a 'rebuild', but it was under warranty, so the dealer got a freebie I guess. The transmission was slipping 2 years later; another mechanic shop changed the transmission solenoids, no problems since.

It had a leak at the manifold gasket at 22k. Repaired. No oil consumption, gas mileage about 20 mpg highway at 75 mph in AZ.

AC compressor out at 180k and 200k.

Electrical - extra DC port not working - not a fuse. Front push switch interior lights - broken switch - would not turn off. Amplified speaker system is crap.

Quadcab door latches failed. Back doors will not open from inside or out. Repaired once at bodyshop. Latches broke again. **Anybody have a permanent fix for this?**

Front end: Have replaced U&L ball joints, pitman arm, swaybar, you name it - everything. The brake rotors cracked, pins broke. Hood latch questionable - hood bounce at 65-75 mph. Goes through speed and temp rated tires like crazy, even though alignment is perfect and tire pressure, rotation and balance is maintained properly.

Paint on door posts peeled. Headlight covers filmy and not cleanable/even with rubbing compound-like products from road salt while in NY. Clearcoat paint peeling. Leather seats wearing badly, although maintained and conditioned regularly. Cupholder broke several times at plastic pins. I had to fabricate a fix for this with metal washers.

This is a truck that has been babied. Or, at least maintained/repaired on a regular basis. The maintenance/repair costs alone could have paid for a DIFFERENT vehicle! I will never buy Dodge again.

Faults:

I bought the truck knowing it had its quirks.

Replaced the water pump shortly after my purchase.

I let the truck sit for around a week during the financing process of the purchase; went out to start it, and the truck would not start. It would turn over, but not fire up until I gave it gas while cranking the engine. I got into the throttle body and found it to be disgusting. Using a lot of throttle body cleaner, I thoroughly cleaned it, rather than doing the big job of replacing it. Now works fine.

General Comments:

After some work shortly after buying the truck, it is very dependable. I give Chrysler high marks on the design and build quality of this vehicle (the fixes I mentioned earlier were more than likely from neglect).

The 3.9L V6 is a very good engine, even though it is underpowered.

Working at a Chrysler dealership and doing my own work to the truck, I have found that computer updates and flashes do help with the performance, not to mention a full tune up was also a big help. The previous owner had Auto-Lite spark plugs on this engine, which caused it to miss like no other. ALWAYS use Champion spark plugs on Chrysler products.

The interior is nicely designed and the seats are very comfortable. This is a great truck, and I would highly recommend a Dodge Ram truck.
