1994 Dodge Shadow EX 3.0 V6

Summary:

Great Value -- Good Fun

Faults:

AC leaks, have been recharging it myself every summer since 1998. AC is weak even when fully charged.

Replaced factory radio at 100k.

Replaced headliner at 140k.

New Paint/Decals at 160k.

General Comments:

Good performance value. The 3.0 is lively even at 165k, and still gets 28-30MPG highway. Easily hits top end on the speedometer -- 130MPH. Have always run it on 87 octane.

Switched to Valvoline Maxlife at 125k, which seems to have cured a minor oil drip.

Have never replaced anything, except for routine maintenance. Original drive train, including clutch at 165k.

Cabin fairly noisy at highway speed.

I bought this car for a song and a dance at 16 -- money well spent.

Summary:

Love it and don't want to get rid of it!!!

Faults:

Minor oil leaks.

Paint started to chip at 110000 km.

Has a strange problem unknown to any mechanic I have taken it too - stalls while driving at any given time with no warning and no explaination.

Hydraulics to open trunk don't work anymore.

General Comments:

Love to drive it because it has great power.

Great handling.

Tons of room in the front, back seat is a little small, but still works.

Great on gas.

1994 Dodge Shadow 2.2L I-4

Summary:

Not worth the time

Faults:

Car has stalled a few times for no reason, it's an automatic. The first few times were in the winter, so I thought it was bad weather. Then it happened a few times in the spring, now it's a problem.

It eats oil like a baby eats candy.

It accelerates slower than a Ford Model T.

If I push the gas pedal too hard, the transmission all of a sudden shifts into neutral.

The brake pads are near dead, and from what I remember the guy I bought it from replaced them a year before.

Not the most beautiful thing to look at.

80 on the highway feels like a driving in an earthquake.

90 on the highway will blow the engine. I'm not saying this out of experience, but I can tell from the sound when I'm at 80.

Sometimes it feels like the car is shifting gears when it clearly isn't.

General Comments:

Although it is a very comfortable car to sit in, and the hatchback is a big convenience for me, being a guitarist and having large equipment, I generally wouldn't recommend it. When there's more problems with the car than there are good things to say about it, that really says something, that it's not a very good car. I'm still wondering myself why an automatic stalls. Not exactly a money pit of a car, but not exactly your safest tin box either. It was a steal at the time for $450, but now I know why it was only $450.

Sounds like its been thrashed to within an inch of its life, especially as the previous owner managed to wear out the brakes in less than a year.

In any case were you expecting perfection for $450?

I will drive this car till the wheels fall off and then I will put em back on and drive it some more.

Summary:

This car is a "Death Trap"

Faults:

I am now in the process of replacing the Fan relay switch.

I recently replaced the Alternator, and the Belt.

After four months I had to replace the Head Gasket.

My Driver seat will not slide back. Therefore I am cramped up in a ball trying to drive.

What, exactly, is wrong with the car to justify calling it a "death trap"?

Certainly nothing you mentioned, with possible exception of the driver's seat (was it not like that when you bought it?) which you should be able to fix with a can of WD-40 and a little effort...
