General Comments:

Absolutely the best vehicle my family has ever owned. At 303,000 miles still only uses 1 quart of oil between oil changes. Drive it 120 miles everyday. Original engine and transmission-neither ever rebuilt. Ford should bring this vehicle back with two sliding doors and it would sell like nickle hamburgers! It is the most versatile vehicle I have ever owned!

Faults:

Distributor failed, shaft broken.

Oil pan leaks, rust.

Exhaust manifold gasket blew out.

Exhaust system leaks easily.

Air Conditioning failed.

Rear gate latch failed.

Ignition switch failed.

Driver seat worn terribly.

Sliding door runners excessively worn out.

Major under body rust.

General Comments:

Actually I love this van despite all of its faults. I was a mechanic and once liked to work on cars, but find this to be a difficult engine to work on. The exhaust manifold gasket will be a horror to change. I replaced the ignition switch and it is fine now. The rear gate latch failed and I repaired it, but it still has its problems. The rear gate shocks are very strong and dependable though. The back seat bench is very heavy for frequent removal. I use this beast like a truck and it does well as both a truck and a car. Extremely reliable though. All of its faults are normal wear and tear and it has been through a hard life and still goes strong. I like it so much I am loathe to part with it, yet working on it makes me miserable. What to do?

Faults:

1) on BOTH aerostar vans, the REAR view mirror has fallen off.

2) on BOTH aerostar vans 87 and 93 models the windshield wiper control messes up.

3) the 93 passenger seat has worn out far worse than the 87,cloth versus the fancy covering.

4) transmission on the 87 aerostar FAILED, so this time i change fluid often on the 93 to prevent.

5) digital instrumentation on 87 failed.

General Comments:

1) the paint job is holding up nicely

2) the tape deck messed up, but the radio still plays.

3) so far the engine is okay and still running.

4) the floor covering is easy to tear off.

5) in general the vans been nice, gas mileage could be better is think maybe 15mpg now, but the rear view mirror terrible along with wiper controller.

Faults:

Both heater core leaks heater hoses difficult to replace front brakes wear out quickly.

General Comments:

Aerostar van needs the 4.0 l engine as smallest engine avaible hauls a lot of cargo Easy to work on execpt under the hood Parts are easy to find in the recycle yard. Good vehicle if maintained properly.

Faults:

Replacing heater hoses is very costly and difficult due to lack of space. The brakes wear and the rotors warps quickly. Everything is hard to work on under the hood. Replacing the engine is extremly difficult, it takes a lot of patience and can be costly, that is why so many end up in the recycling yard.

General Comments:

Parts can be found at the local recycle yard, many parts interchange between the different year models. Many engine parts interchange with other Ford products, such as the Tauraus, the engine brackets are different. The 3.0 L engine also comes in the Mazda truck. The starter listed for the Aerostar costs $20.00 more than the same starter listed for the Mazada, go figure! Also the same gasket set is cheaper for the Mazda!
