1986 Ford Bronco II XLT 2.9

Summary:

I wish they still made this truck!!!

Faults:

Cracked a head.

Water pump shaft leaked.

Front and rear drive shaft U-Joints seized.

Valve covers leak.

Rear spring and shackle bushings loose.

Is rusting like there is no tomorrow, replaced the drivers side floor (completely gone!)

General Comments:

It's a great little truck. Solidly built and handles quite well.

It's not the fastest for the highway (geared low), but works wonders off-roads. It will go where no others will.

When I retire it from the road it's going up to my hunting lodge permanently as an off-road truck.

1986 Ford Bronco II 2.9 Liter EFI

Summary:

Good all around vehicle

Faults:

Changed the valve cover seals.

Heater core blew at 91,000 miles.

Air conditioning unit smashed the coil at 89,000 miles.

Driver's seat is broken.

Twin traction beam front axle is hard to modify without adjusting the camber.

An ignition module died at 87000 miles.

General Comments:

I went from being a die hard Chevy guy to actually loving my Ford. I've spent not more than $250 so far. With a little tweaking you can get the motor to be a little more powerful, but the low end torque makes for good pulling power. A nice lift kit and some good tires makes for a nice off-road/snow vehicle.

The wiring harness is a quite messy, but with general maintenance, the car stays in good order.

1986 Ford Bronco II 2.9 V6

Summary:

Great 4x4

Faults:

Power steering fluid leaks, sagging springs, and the starter is starting to go.

Shaky around turns.

Engine ticking.

Needs new exhaust.

Problem with the alternator.

Wiring needs to be redone.

General Comments:

I love my vehicle. Just put a lift on it. Will be replacing many parts soon.

4 wheel drive gets me through anything, even the stuff that my friends in their big trucks can't get through or up.

Will hopefully be putting in a 302 soon when this engine dies with the help of my brother.

Love the look of it, never had any serious problems with it, in fact my sister just bought an 85 Bronco II and loves it.

1986 Ford Bronco II Eddie Bauer 2.8 V-6

Summary:

Total reliability and comfort!!!!!

Faults:

Ive had my Bronco II for a while now and it has had a few problems. It had a power steering leak, the starter went out, and a few other minor problems but nothing that the Shadetree mechanic can't fix.

General Comments:

I have two small children and it is a really reliable source of transportation. It may have a few problems but the level of comfort totally overrides the problems. I believe that I will own my Bronco for a long time and when the motor goes out, HEY I'll replace it, it's well worth it!!!

I just purchased an Older Bronco ll (1986) in very good condition and so far I love it. But my daughter told me that they did a report in school and Bronoc ll's are the most dangerous SUV. I'm scared to drive it now.

There is a surprisingly large Bronco II community on the internet, and the overwhelming consensus seems to be that the truck is perfectly safe to drive if you're driving legally.

I wouldn't put too much stock in a school report. No offense to your daughter, but most kids' ideas about "research" involve surfing the web and reading whatever is posted there without doing any in-depth fact checking or verification of sources. I wouldn't be afraid to drive a vehicle just because somebody says they managed to roll it doing 70 in a 90 degree turn. Just don't do 70 in a 90 degree turn. Simple.

I absolutely love my 1986 Eddie Bauer Ford Bronco II in Hunter Green color with beige accents. I am the original owner of 22 years. The car is an exceptionally easy drive and very comfortable, she sits high, turns on a dime, and has a great, fun look to it. I've had the usual problems with the car, but worked through them as the car is so unique. At this stage the Bronco still needs some items fixed, but I always said I'd keep the Bronco until it falls apart. There are so few around today when there used to be so many. Did you know the car came with a set of luggage? I still have it. Driving is no problem around corners if the corners are taken slower as the car sits high and has a short wheel base. When I am forced to buy a new car, I'll most likely pass this car along to a member of my family.
