2001 Ford Escape XLT Leather 3.0L V6

Summary:

Power and Options - Yay! Quality of Parts - Boo!

Faults:

Excessive front brake dust on wheels. The rear brakes were not working properly causing the front brakes to be applying all stopping force. This was reinforced by the dealer inspection. At about 38000km the front rotors and pads needed to be replaced, in which the dealer at which I got the Escape quoted me $700 parts and labor to fix (not under warranty they told me). Front brake pads at 2 millimeters thickness | Rear Brake shoes at 4.2 millimeters thickness. When pads and shoes are new they are at 4.5 millimeters in thickness. Luckily, at a different (and much farther away) dealership who inspected it and determined I could have the work done including the rear brakes repaired under warranty for $140 (price of front pads only).

Front driver side wheel bearing needed to be replaced (under warranty).

Experienced stalling problems at low speed and Rpm while turning. Fuel system problem dealer replaced parts and is under further investigation.

Poor fuel economy: 17 liters per 100km or 13 miles per gallon. I'm getting 300 kilometers per 50 liter tank of gas.

Rear Door Weather stripping loose.

General Comments:

This Escape is quick. There is a lot of power under the hood. It handles like a car. Lots of power for passing even on the sea to sky highway. It's great compared to a Supercharged Xterra (requires premium gas) 210 horse power to the Escapes 200 horse power naturally aspirated on regular.

I could never find the right seating position in this truck since I got it. I could not say that I was very comfortable, but it's good. The 60/40 split rear seat reclines, and handles are handy too.

The sun roof is huge!

I also have a 2001 Ford Escape. Now it's time for front brake pads (44,000 miles), rotors ane throw away. Dealer says they can't be turned, factory issue are one time use only. As for your stalling issue, Ford is doing a recall on them for this same reason. Dealer says fully covered and takes approx. one hour. I like the Escape for all the creature comforts, but, some thought needed to be put into the design of the braking system to eliminate some hidden cost. Overall I would give it a 7 on a scale of 1 - 10.

13 mpg? Are you kidding me? We live at 7800 ft and do mountain driving which involves a lot of stops/starts, up and down hills and slowing for curves. Our V6 still gets 17 to 20 mpg with my lead-footed teenager driving it. Are you sure someone isn't taking your gas?

2001 Ford Escape LX V6

Summary:

Fine for a small family or older couple

Faults:

So far, so good.

General Comments:

I was amazed the first time I stomped the gas pedal in the V6 Escape. Those 200 horses showed up quickly!

Was quite comfortable on a 500 mile trip and I'm a big guy.

The only real complaint I have is that the gas mileage seems to be getting worse. Averaged a lowly 15.8 mpg at first, but is now in the 14 mpg range.

Goes great through the snow.

2001 Ford Escape 6 cylinder

Summary:

Great Highway Ride

Faults:

Nothing wrong with this vehicle so far.

General Comments:

For the most part it has a great ride on the Highway or on gravel.

On rough paved roads it tends to bump around a bit with a light load.

Very good in snow. Pulls very well in deep snow (6 inches or more). Very good comfortable feel on the highway in slippery conditions.

Lots of room compared with the RAV4.

2001 Ford Escape XLS 3.0L V6

Summary:

Makes you wonder why people buy CRV's and RAV4's

Faults:

None (brand new).

General Comments:

I had been looking at new cars for about a month, and the dealer could NOT have been more honest or helpful. However, there had not been any incentives to buy just yet. TWO days before my lease ran out on my Bravada, the Ford dealership announced special financing, and apparently, cars were being snatched up.

To make a long story short, I bought this Escape 100% over the phone, without test-driving or even SEEING it. I never recommend anybody do this.

However, the Escape has been nothing but a remarkable vehicle, and I have NOT been disappointed. I live on a VERY steep hill which most comparable small-ute's can't get up. (think CRV & RAV4). The Escape makes it look easy.

The seats are very supportive and comfortable for long-term trips. There seems to be a generous amount of space (way more than in my Bravada), for such a small ute.

Although I'm indifferent to the front end, I think the Escape looks pretty agreeable, although I'm partial to the Mazda Tribute's looks.

I've heard gossip about how the Escape isn't a "real" ute. I can see where they're coming from (and the tires say "summer!"), but I certainly think if the tires were changed, it would certainly be suitable for the occasional light-trail path.

Besides, that's further than anyone who buys one would take it anyway.

For the money I paid, it was a terrific value, and I would HIGHLY reccomend over the wimpy RAV4's and CRV's ANYDAY.

You obviously have not driven a 2002 CRV. I tried the Escape and it did not compare to the CRV in the following categories: CRV has more usable space, better mileage, better brakes and a more aggressive engine. I will admit that the Escape is a nice looker though. You may want to take a look at the CRV when you are ready for a change.

The Ford Escape is a great buy and a wonderful vehicle

Faults:

Only problem so far was a cracked windshield which Ford repaired for free.

This is a wonderful vehicle. We bought it for our daughter to take back and forth to college.

It's very easy to handle.

The service at Ford was wonderful.

She's 19 and just loves it. I wish I had one.
