1988 Ford Escort GL 1.9

Summary:

Best car I have ever owned

Faults:

I have only had minor things go wrong with the car. Prior to my purchase of this vehicle, I owned a Ford Ranger. I bought this Escort to get me back and forth on my 120 mile per day commute, and the gas mileage of this car is excellent! This car had been in an accident before I bought it, and the body damage is still there, but is minor.

However, the frame up front began to separate, and it made my steering unsteady. This has been fixed, and the steering is true now.

The emergency brake handle quit working.

Goes through starter solenoids quickly.

General Comments:

I love this car and wouldn't trade it for a brand new car. Not even another Escort.

This car gets great gas mileage.

This Escort is very compact.

This Escort is very comfortable.

And, it has mildly good acceleration. Not bad for a 4 cylinder.

1988 Ford Escort EXP Luxury Coupe 1.9L

Summary:

For the $700 I paid for this car, It has been worth it

Faults:

Timing belt went out after 58,000 miles.

Speed sensor went out at 59043.6 miles.

Cruise control has never worked since I have owned the car.

General Comments:

This is a very inexpensive car.

Great gas mileage. Approximately 35 miles per gallon.

For the engine size, the car has some get up and go.

The absence of rear seats make the cargo area perfect for larger items.

Handles great in all seasons. Especially winter. Perfect for snow covered roads.

However, the ceiling is rather low and injuries to the head may occur.

This car has over 500K miles on it?

That must be some kind of record for an Escort.

16th Oct 2004, 13:54

No, I just noticed that. It only has 60,000 miles on it now, not 600,000. I need to fix that.

These cars are pretty amazing, Mine has 300 000 km on it, ans it still runs pretty good. Very good handling and fun car to drive.

Purchased mine in August of 1988, new - has about 250,000 miles on it today. Great little car! Really reliable too, especially for a car with enough miles on it to drive one way to the moon!

I have an '82 EXP, bought for 600 bucks. This is one on the least expensive and most reliable cars I have ever owned! I hope you have as good as luck with yours, as I have had with mine.

1988 Ford Escort GL 1.7

Summary:

Not bad for a Family beater

Faults:

I paid $300 United States dollars for this escort and it was well spent. It went through a map sensor, a set of tires, a starter, and a headlight switch in less than three years! Not too bad, one problem I do have recently is that it warms up and dies on me (distributor) I'm thinking. but well worth the time and money.

General Comments:

The car runs awesome at high speeds 80 + mph!! a little shy on the handling, but what ever!

"Family beater"?

That means you put your family in it and then drive at 80+ mph?

That would be a beating, indeed.

1988 Ford Escort GL 1.9

Summary:

Cheap town car

Faults:

Transmission blew up at 133,000 km.

General Comments:

This car is great if you're an older, laid back driver. I don't think it's really a car for younger people because repair costs are heavy.

I don't get how the repair costs are heavy... the only thing that went wrong with it is the transmission?

My Escort GL is about 135000km and transmission seems about to give trouble, but still work smooth if hot. A very good tough little car indeed. Pepe.
