1989 Ford Escort GT 1.9

Summary:

Great car as long as you put average miles on it

Faults:

There always seemed to be something wrong with the car.

Front end needed to be replaced 3 times during the time I owned it.

Clutch went at 75,000, and again at 140,000 miles.

Brakes constantly needed repair.

Starter and battery replaced 3 times each.

Motor mounts broke ~ 125,000.

Air conditioner broken (broke when I received the car)

General Comments:

Given the amount of miles that I put on the car, understandably repairs were needed.

No matter what was wrong with the car at the time, I was always able to make it home, or to a repair shop.

Excellent insurance rates.

Great gas mileage.

Paint still looked like new in January 2002.

Handled great in Michigan weather.

Handles turns with great ease.

In my opinion, for the 6 years that I owned the car and the 120,000 miles I put on it, the repairs were less than one would imagine.

I have a 1989 Escort GT with a 1.9L high output engine now, and the guy who owned it had drove it harsh, and ripped many things apart, and I can't believe the amount of reliability. It starts in -35 degree weather with no problem; the heater isn't the greatest though.

Gas is great, especially when you have a very long commute.

Overall a great car, good engine, and comfortable. Very good for a first time driver, manual shift or not.

Summary:

Another good job by Ford

Faults:

The only things that have gone wrong are. The fog lights catching on fire, the seat belt motor went bad at 100,000 miles.

General Comments:

This car handles vary well, It takes corners like a cat.

I have always loved this still to this day.

Hello, I got a 1986 mercury lynx xr3, 1986,1987 and 1988 escort gt in my possession, and guess what they are all might we say garbage. the lynx has amazing power, but the frame can't take it. and all the escort's I've changed let's say everything engine, trans, suspension, spindles, steering column, rad, heater core, many cylinder heads and so on and on and on... They are great cars to have fun with, but you know what FORD stand for Fix Or Repair Daily, Found On the Road Dead. :)

If you love spending numerous hours on a rice rocket that you can't get any after market parts for, this is the car you want.

You "fix or repair daily" so it will be "first on race day," hello get with the program.

1989 Ford Escort LX 1.9

Summary:

An excellent first car

Faults:

My engine head cracked at 80,000 miles. I had it replaced really cheap from a junk yard.

My starter died when I was teaching someone to drive my manual transmission. I learned the hard way, don't operate your starter for more than 15 seconds in a two minute interval. It cost about $40 to get a new one.

My rear quarter panel window got broken by a flying stone from a lawn mower. It cost a fortune if you try to get a new one. I got a replacement for about $49 at a junk yard and had it installed for about $35.

My accessories belt got worn at 82000 miles. Real cheap and easy to replace.

The driver side automatic seat belt stopped working for some reason recently. It was still easy to pull it over my head when I enter the car though. That's far easier than having to buckle seat belts every time I enter the car though.

One of my muffler braces broke at about 82000 miles. It cost about $6 to replace though. A real pain to install though.

The horn on the car sounds like it is really a old car. I need to replace it with one that sounds normal.

The trunk support braces got weak due to age. It's a real pain to have to hold up the trunk.

General Comments:

I love my first car. My car is painted in a cool baby-blue body color and a navy-blue low profile body kit with matching navy-blue cloth top.

I also have some cool after market additions to my car:

-Sunroof

-Radar detector

-Car alarm (cool to walk towards my Escort and disarm my alarm)

-Steel pedals

-Compact disk player

-Spoiler

-Cool running read light on dash board, just for fasion

-Chrome mag rims

-Chrome skirting

-Extremely clean interior.

This car makes a very nice college car.
