1991 Ford Escort Pony 4 Cylinder

Summary:

Looking for a used car for under $1000?

Faults:

Dashboard was cracked in a few places.

Brake pads were replaced and brake rotors were warped.

Clutch died at 124000 miles.

General Comments:

Ever wanted to get 24,000 miles out of a car for almost no money?

When my transmission went out, I just junked the car because it would have cost more than I paid for the car itself! The purchase of this little car was the best $600 I ever spent.

You can't beat the price of an escort, and this car (which I originally bought just to get me through the winter) survived thousands of rush-hour miles, a 900-mile round trip to Chicago, and my constant high-rpm driving.

The four-cylinder engine was not a powerhouse, but it got wonderful mileage (35 miles per gallon) and was easy to drive with the 4 speed clutch.

One problem - this car burned oil very rapidly in the final 1/5 of its life.

Many of you who have bought cars that are in their final stages of life have had to worry about the possibility of it breaking down at any moment. Escorts, however are about as reliable as they come.

By the way, it drives great on ice and snow and started every time in the sub-zero temperatures.

This car doesn't look like much, but I grew to love it. Those of you making payments every two months that are equal to what I paid for this car in full are missing out on the simple pleasures of the Ford Escort Pony.

I had to get rid my 1991 Escort Pony before I left Chicago. It was a great car that never let me down. Was this one white with a tan interior? I always wondered what became of it.

1991 Ford Escort GT 1.8 DOHC

Summary:

Nice, fast car, but too many engine problems

Faults:

Brakes wore very quick.

Transmission blew.

Engine blew.

The automatic seat belts kept jamming.

General Comments:

The car was great when I first got it.

It was a cute little car, with a stylish look. After I had the car for about 12,000 miles the transmission blew and then the engine at the same time.

I had to get rid of it because on a GT those don't come cheap. I'm getting a 1989 Ford Escort LX for my next car. I'm buying it for $250 U.S. dollars. Nice price and it only has 40,00o miles on it.

Sounds like a lemon or previous owner did not take care of the vehicle. We have owned our 91 Escort GT. for 12 years strait from the Dealer. Never any engine or mechanical problems. and runs strong with 136,000 Mi. now. I am very happy with the escort gt and for a 1.8 Lt. It has lots of power still and very gutsy!!!

I have had great success with my '91 Escort GT also. Reglular lubrication has kept it going and it has 150k/miles plus! The 127hp 1.8L DOHC in combination with a 5 speed manual gearbox makes it snappy. It has way more guts than a civic, though the suspension is stiff. The ride is very rough. I feel every little bump. The four disc brakes make cornering lots of fun. Hydroplaning or skids are rare. For a hatchback, it has a lot of features. Creature comforts include floor vents for the back seat and you can latch open the windows. The automatic seatbelts are a real drag. They jam often.

1991 Ford Escort LX

Summary:

High

Faults:

The alternator had to be replaced once.

The rear wheels were getting jammed and the brakes/drums had to be replaced at 70,000 miles.

Its hard going up a hill and accelarating now. Maybe because the engine is getting old. The engine seems to be making a rattling sound after 60,000 miles. Whenever it goes over pot-holes it bumps like something is going to fall apart and the steering rattles... maybe the shock absorbers are gone. Coolant light comes on and goes even though there is nothing wrong with it.

General Comments:

Runs like a dog without much maintenance and repairs. The general maintenance I do is oil changes and air filter change. I have also had the transmission oil change done once. The seats are very comfortable. The brakes seem to have become weak although they don't screech. I have driven the car in Iowa, Toronto, New York City and all over New Jersey. Runs in all types of weather conditions and roads. Starts up even after leaving it for a few months when I go on vacations.
