Money NOT worth spending
Escort was great.. until it got into the 120,000 mark. The brakes were a done deal, the brake hose disintegrated, and the shocks in the back of the car wore off.
It's a decent car for gas and stuff, but the repairs for it were unbelievable. Driving it, I could feel every tiny bump I ran into. I don't know the newer Escorts, if they're decent, but the '93.. no way. Unless you want to pay about 1400 for it.

Easily the best wagon ever built, but suffers a bad rap just the same
- The only time something went wrong with my Escort was when the windshield washer 'spitters' got clogged up with mud and wouldn't spit water to clean the windshield.
- Regular maintenance items.
The 'door unlocked' indicator on the inside of the tailgate was excellent.
The wagon held all of the baby supplies.
The back seat was small for adults but fine for a car seat and a seven-year old. Fitting three adults back there was a joke - like putting 20 clowns into a Mini Cooper, not to mention that the Escort would bottom out.
Acceleration was AWFUL.
Gas mileage was about 40 city and 42 highway fully loaded and with the automatic transmission.
The brakes were okay.
The interior held up well to the abuse we put it through. Without seat covers or sun protection, it looked as nice as the day it probably looked on its original lot.
I cherished every minute of having the Escort (except for the windshield water spitting episode).
I can honestly say that I miss my Escort. I drove it like I stole it, and it always begged for more. Yeah, it was lame and had the word 'boring' written all over it. But, WOW! What a car!

I mostly drove my Escort on the highway to and from work. I remember drafting behind trucks and not doing jackrabbit stops or brake slams. I kept the cruise on 55-60 miles per hour.
I also drove without the air conditioning most of the time. If you drive with the windows down on the highway, it chugs gas. My Escort was also new then.
I have also been told that if you try a new filter and plugs (I don't remember the kind for either), your mileage may improve. But, 40 MPG wasn't unreasonable.
The first Escort I ever bought I owned for a mere 10 miles. I bought it and when it was delivered to the dealership, there was a chip in the paint, so I asked them to touch it up. When I came back the next day, there was paint EVERYWHERE. It was all over the hub caps, the windshield, the windows, everything! All for just a small chip of paint on the hood! I asked them to replace the vehicle with a new car. I drove the new car off the lot and my check engine light came on almost instantaneously. I drove it 10 miles down the road and traded it in on a Civic. The Civic lasted me 183,000 miles without a single major repair. Let's just say I definitely became a repeat buyer of Honda.
I'm the original author of this review and I'm sorry about about that... but after a point of pathetic customer service, it can get humorous.
My friend had a Chevy truck that kept going out of alignment (like every 10K miles). He did his own maintenance, but gave up and took it to the dealer, and when they couldn't fix it, he dumped Chevy.

Gas mileage seems overstated, I have an auto and the best I've been able to muster is 26 city and 34 hwy.
