1997 Ford Escort LX

Summary:

The perfect car for anyone of all ages!

Faults:

I live in New York, but when I drove to Florida, I got into a car accident and totaled the whole front and right side.

Nothing else really happened although that's not the cars fault, its mine so I guess nothing really did happen to this car.

General Comments:

I've had many cars before, but not one of them has been as reliable and excellent as this car. This car is the best. I drive it to school everyday and all my friends have a lot of room in the rear.

The car handles great and even a gentle tap on the gas accelerates the car up to a perfect speed. The only thing I dislike about this car is that it only has a cassette player. One day I'll have to put in a CD player. Anyway, the seats are very comfortable and what more can I say.

I LOVE THIS CAR!

1997 Ford Escort 2.0

Summary:

Reliable and affordable

Faults:

In the 4 years I have owned my Escort, I have only had to replace the alternator.

General Comments:

I always get about 31 miles per gallon of gas.

The only repairs I have had to make were from ordinary wear, like new brakes and a battery.

Would highly recommend this car for those who need reliable transportation that looks good without lots of expensive bells and whistles.

1997 Ford Escort LX 2.0 Liter, 4 Cylinder

Summary:

A good value used (under $3000) that should last as long as any higher priced US car out there

Faults:

Replaced brakes 2x in 2 years.

Light on shifter is out.

Computer problem caused Check Engine Light to come on when there was no problem.

3rd cylinder spark plug and coil went bad @ 79,000mi.

General Comments:

For it's size and engine, this car is very quick and zippy. It can keep up with most V6's off the line and has no problem coming up to speed. It blows away newer Caveliers that I have driven.

The drawback with this car is that it is nothing special inside. If anything, parts of the interior are annoying. I bought this car used with a cassette player, and due to the oddly shaped console, I can never have an after market cd player installed. Also, the back seat is rather small for most adults. You can only really fit 2 people comfortably, and the only way you will get 5 college kids in it comfortably, is if they just happen to be midgets.

Overall the car is worth the money. It's not going to impress anyone with it's looks (although the contours of it are NOT ugly at all), but most passangers will be suppried at its pickup and quickness. If you just need something dependable (have only put about $300 into the car due to problems) modern, and yet quick at the same time, this is a good bet.

1997 Ford Escort LX 2.0 4 Cylinder

Summary:

This car does what it is designed to do very well

Faults:

Rear coil springs broke (common Escort problem).

Balancer pulley (belt pulley on crankshaft) broke.

Two tie rods needed replacing.

Rear hatch handle broke.

General Comments:

My Escort is a station wagon. It has excellent cargo capacity with the seats folded down.

Interior comfort is OK. Seats are OK, not great. Legroom for rear passengers is very limited.

Not a driver's car. Acceleration is adequate at best. Cornering is very poor, significant body roll. In fairness, it is not made to drive like a sports car.

Great gas mileage. 33 MPG highway with an automatic transmission.

Generally very reliable, except for a few chronic Escort problems: rear coil springs (fairly expensive to fix) and tie rods (not too bad). Balancer pulley giving out was an unwelcome surprise.

I would like to add that I own a 1997 Ford Escort wagon. I bought it new in Dec. of 1997. My car now has 82,457 miles on it and it still runs great. The only problem that I have found is that the rear coil springs will break. I am having mine replaced this week and I might add for the second time since I bought the car. I do not haul any real heavy things either. I do not know if it is a defect of some kind or what, but it is fairly expensive to fix. Other than this one problem, I have been well pleased with the car.
