1999 Ford Escort ZX2

Summary:

A good buy and very fuel efficient

Faults:

My A/C compressor was leaking and I got that fixed. Now my A/C works fine.. other than that everything in my car goes very well. I don't regret my purchase at all.

1999 Ford Escort ZX2 Sport Hot 2.0 Zetec

Summary:

The ZX2 is a better deal than the Focus when it comes to price, performance, and reliability.

Faults:

Nothing mechanical, just some undesireables.

Shift knob was too big for comfort, but it was easily replaced by an aftermarket knob.

Pedals were too small, but again a easy replacement through aftermarket.

I wish the gas tank was larger.

General Comments:

I totaled my 2002 ZX5 this summer, so I replaced it with a ZX2 for $4500.

I think I made a good choice, because the ZX2 seems to accelerate quicker, and the gear ratios seem more suited for twisty mountain roads.

Handling is tight stock, but I upgraded to Ford Racing's Race Suspension, and I think it is total worth the $1200 investment.

The interior could be better, but the way the car drives makes you forget about the lack of options.

The car is easy to work on and upgrade, and a great deal on stock performance.

1999 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0L zetec

Summary:

An over all Great Car

Faults:

Mostly normal maintenance.

New tires.

New back brakes.

Back brakes squeak.

General Comments:

This is a great car for the money. I bought mine used in 2004 with 75,000 miles on it for only $3,500. They are quick and good looking, and good on gas.

My car also does great in the snow. I bought it last winter and it drove perfectly in the snow.

The interior room is minimal. I am 6' and the seat fits me perfectly when slid the whole way back. Someone any bigger might have a problem. The seats are very comfortable however.

I would recommend this car to anyone. They are cheap and good on gas, and beat up on talons and eclipses. There are many mods you can purchase for this car as well. If you are looking for a good looking, cheap and reliable car, then a zx2 is the car for you!

I work at a Ford dealership and purchased my ZX2 new.

The car is amazing...acceleration, fuel economy (30 mpg) durability, stability, snow traction, and the feel you are in command.

I, ve logged 68000 miles on her and the performance is the same as when I took delivery.

1999 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0 zetec

Summary:

I recommend this car to every one!

Faults:

Normal wear and tear.

I just replaced my struts.

Had some work done on the brakes and suspension when I bought it.

General Comments:

I love my car.

It handles very well and has plenty of power.

Very cheap to drive and has extremely good gas mileage. I average about 32 mpg.

There are a lot of after market parts available for the tuner.

Some people complain about their transmission going early, I have not had any problems with mine yet.

1999 Ford Escort SE wagon 2.0L

Summary:

A great bargain I'll just replace the parts needed when time arises.

Faults:

I have the rear window washer/wiper quit for no reason or warning.

The right headlight socket burned out and needed replacement.

I've had to replace the front pads 3 times in 5 years.

Replaced the alternator and thermostat and battery.

General Comments:

It was beauty when I saw a used one on the lot and later decided I wanted my first new car to be an Escort SE wagon.

I've no major problems even when check engine lights come on. It's been to the dealer twice, but labor cost are too much so I perform most repairs myself.

Even though most check ups have been ignored it still performs almost like new.

1999 Ford Escort SE Sedan 2.0 SPI

Summary:

Not a Toyota or Honda, but good value for the money

Faults:

Trim plastic piece on dash deformed in summer heat (warranty, 10 000km).

Fuel hatch replaced (warranty, 30 000km).

Engine vibration (fixed under warranty).

Rust on door frame (warranty, 56 000km).

Emergency brake light indicator (warranty, 55000km).

Fuel pump (120 000km).

Left tie rod (150 000km).

Right tie rod (170 000km).

Front brakes (65 000km and 45 000km thereafer).

Rear brakes (100 000km).

Right side passenger door light switch is broken.

Light in dashboard (150 000km).

General Comments:

In the beginning, the car had a few minor problems that were replaced under warranty. After about 30000km, the car settled down and has been remarkably reliable.

With the exception of my fuel pump - which I must admit driving on empty one hot summer day - the rest of my 'problems' have been regular wear and tear.

As for daily driving... well let's face it, it's an economy car. Performance is on par with other cars in its class (10.5 seconds 0-60mph). Despite all the cheap plastic bits and pieces in this car, they have all survived the test of time. Even such fragile pieces as the inner door handles and window cranks.

Engine noise is pervasive, but is not overly unpleasant, provided you use your radio.

Overall, a great first car and something some of the import diehards may miss. That's good for the consumer since you'll be liable to get a good deal on one as a result.
