Summary:

The car is confusing.

Faults:

I'm confused, I think its transmission problems.

General Comments:

I stopped at a stop light and pushed on the gas pedal my car wouldnt go. I towed it home and 1 hour later i started it and it went into gear and drove. I was told it needs a new transmission. I was also told that a filter and fluid change would fix the problem. any suggestions????????

In any car, the transmission fluid and filter should be changed every 10k miles. Seeing that you've owned the car for about 25k miles, have you had the transmission fuild and filter changed at all yet to this point? If not, that might be your problem, especially if the previous owner never did it as well. However, not changing the fluid and filter can drastically shorten the lifespan of a transmission also. So if it's never been done, it's possible the transmission is worn out. Start with the cheap fix. Get the transmission fluid and filter changed. See if that cures the problem. If not, I would recommend calling your local Ford dealer to see if there are any open recalls or service bulletins for your car on transmission issues. If so, it should be free to get it fixed. If not, you might be looking at a transmission rebuild...$$$.

To the poster above: I don't think 25,000 miles on trans oil is going to wreck your transmission. I have a Pontiac Sunbird, and the GM manual says to change it after 100,000 miles. There isn't any combustion going on in the trans, so that means less junk in your oil (as compared to the engine's oil).

To the owner: If you think it is the trans oil for some reason, pull out the dipstick to the trans, and see if the oil is red. If it isn't smell it and see if it is burnt. Also, get some off the dipstick and rub it between your fingers. See if it feels gritty, or if there is metal in it.

2002 Ford Escort ZX2 16v DOHC 2.0L Zetec w/vct on exhaust cam

Summary:

VTEC this!

Faults:

No problems.

General Comments:

Under-appreciated sport compact, faster than an SVT Focus at 1/8th the price.

A lot of power for a small car, many modifications available, and a great community to help out.

The seats are so comfortable you could fall asleep in them.

I don't know how you figure they are quick, I have one and I also have 1995 and 1998 Dodge Neon's, that will wax this Escort all over and back!! I haven't taken this car to the track, but I'd bet it would be in the 18s or so. My 1998 Neon is a low 13 second car, with just over $4,000 invested, and after I upgrade the fuel and a bigger turbo, I'll be in the low 12's!!

Ford claims to have no cure for the vibration, I just have to live with it.

I've owned 5 escorts and never had any trouble with any of them, no vibrations at all. They're well worth the money they sold for new; good gas mileage. I think they came a long ways since they came out, in the early 80s?

I own a 2002 ford escort, and it vibrates a TON as well. Buyer beware...

In my experience with Civics, standard transmissions run at high RPMs. My SI did 70 MPH at 3500 RPM. It was a bit annoying, but I was still able to pass people without downshifting.
