2002 Ford Excursion Limited 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel

Summary:

Extremely reliable

Faults:

2 years ago needed to replace the original oil pan. Engine had to be pulled. Replaced original turbo gaskets and pipes, rebuilt the fuel bowl. Nothing done ever to original engine block and its internals. When got it back from the shop, the truck had its original power and acceleration.

General Comments:

Used to pull my 10,000 pound race trailer like you were pulling a little red wagon behind you.

2002 Ford Excursion LX 5.4 2V V8

Summary:

Rare SUV, easy to mod, can last a lifetime

Faults:

Replaced bad alternator.

Replaced brake pads.

Replaced rusted brake line in back.

Replaced driver's side step and welded.

Various minor electrical issues.

General Comments:

The Excursion remains my favourite truck. I got a hold of mine in Canada with the weaker 5.4L V8 and only 2WD.

I agree with other Excursion lovers, nothing beats the V10 or the 7.3 diesel if you find one somehow and have deep pockets for gas. Now the good part about the 5.4 in 2002 is you get the 2V motor which is fairly reliable and you can mod it easily to increase your mpg and hp. All I did was add a cold air intake, electric fan mod, and long tube headers and would say I make around 300hp now over the stock 260. Oh I also enjoy 20-22mpg on the highway and about 16mpg in the city; you will not see this mileage with the V10 or 4WD. It does have good torque off the line, however it does feel underpowered and don't expect to be passing people on the highway easily, even with those mentioned mods it's a heavy truck.

Ball joints and tie rods are heavy duty; harder to replace but last a long time. Drive shaft and axle are strong and durable; its weak point I would say is the 4r100 transmission, although with a cooler it is not easy to break it, but you can still break it.

These trucks must be undercoated yearly too if you don't want a lot of rust.

Mine holds 9 passengers as well and was able to tow 8500lbs recently, RPMs ran a bit high, stock is 7000lbs I'm pretty sure, but with those mods above and a larger transmission cooler, it didn't break a sweat or my pockets for gas either at that.

How is the 4r100 holding up under the increased power?

2002 Ford Excursion Limited 7.3L gasoline

Summary:

BUY NOW-Great deal while gas prices are high!

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with this truck. It's huge! It has a lot of 'slop' in the steering, like a Lincoln Town Car, but that's a good thing because if it had 'deft/sport-like' handling you'd flip your wrist and have 18 feet of vehicle encroaching the other lane!

People say these get terrible gas mileage, but I get 13.7 on the freeway, and about 12.5 around town. That's better than a Hummer! It has major torque and even doing 80 mph, never turns more than 2200 rpms!-Engine wear-not likely!

The interior amount of lights (especially the awesome reading lamps for the two rear seats), the multiple cigarette lighter plugs, and copious amounts of drink holders all make this truck very convenient for driver and passengers alike.

In any case, they've been discontinued by Ford, so the selection is limited to whatever you can find at a used car lot, someone's front yard or remaining stocks and wherever that may be. That's probably not a bad thing, either.

2002 Ford Excursion Ltd 7.3L

Summary:

I may have only owned my Excursion a short time, but, I know it will be no disappointment

Faults:

No problems. I realize the car is new to me, but I was able to obtain a repair history report from the dealer I bought it from. The original owner purchased it at the same dealer, and had all the services performed there. I am a auto repair technican with over 11 years experience. During this time i've worked as a diesel technican also, and can verify that if routine maintenance is performed the 7.3L engine is well worth the cost over the gas engine option.

General Comments:

People need to realize that not all of us have 1-2 kids, a little ankle bitter, and enjoy staying at home, or in hotels. I have a family of 6 and NEED the room! We traded up from a 2003 Expedition, good vehicle, but for us, too small. Someone said that on the Ford website there was no mpg rating for the Excursion. That is because, if a vehicle is over a certain GVWR, then it dose not have to list average fuel ratings. Our Expedition averaged 15-16mpg in a good mix of city/highway driving. On trips it was more like 19-20mpg. these are numbers without a trailer. Anything in those ranges with the Excurson is fine with me. The added room is worth more at the pump to us. If the diesel gets 18+, all the better. I also own a 2003 F-350 4X4 crew cab dually. It has the 7.3L also. I ordered it new with a manual trans.. It has a 4.30:1 gear ratio, and I get 18-19mpg unloaded with that. Lets see a gas job beat that.

You need the room of a giant SUV? Wouldn't a minivan do the job better and at better fuel efficiency?

9th Jan 2012, 06:41

But not everyone wants to drive a minivan. I know I don't.

9th Jan 2012, 16:23

A full-size SUV like the Excursion or Suburban is a lot roomier than a mini-van (even the larger modern ones). And like the last commentor wrote, I wouldn't be caught dead driving a mini-van, they are the epitome of boring automobiles. I would take a full-size station wagon from the 70's-90's any day over a van. It is a mystery to me why anyone would rather drive a gawd-awful mini-van than a large station wagon, but then a lot of things about the modern auto market baffle me.

Not to mention minivans tend to be complete piles of garbage, and are next to impossible to work on.

There was no 7.3 V-10 manual - a 7.3 diesel auto V-8 and a 6.8 gas V-10. Whichever one you meant - both great motors in many ways.

2002 Ford Excursion Limited V10

Summary:

Exactly what I expected and more, a welcome behemeth

Faults:

I am very happy with our new Ford Excursion. We have not had any trouble with the vehicle at all.

General Comments:

I went from a 1995 Ford F150, to a new 1999 Chevrolet Silverado, and could not believe the difference in the quality and reliability. Chevrolet really let me down, across the board, from the CD player, to switches, anti lock brake controller, pinion gear in the drive train, upholstery, even the battery had to be replaced twice... not because it wasn't working, but because it split down the side, all on its own. At 52000 miles, I gave it back. I thought I would give Chrysler a try... 2002 Ram 1500 4x4, 360, 10MPG!! I am back to Ford to stay, I'm sorry I left... very sorry.
