Faults:

4x4 stopped working.

Front seal on the transmission went out. This is apparently a known problem from what I hear from the shops I have called. All the A4DL transmissions, have issues like this. Once fixed, if fixed right, it can last you another 100,000 miles.

General Comments:

I got this car from a local used dealer, when my Beretta died. In fact it just barely made it to the dealership for the trade in.

Anyway, the Explorer was great to me until the tranny went. I used to call it, my Ford that is more like a Chevy. I was never left stranded anywhere, in fact when my tranny went, I was only half a block from home, and it was easy to it push home :).

I love my Explorer; in fact I may just fix it and keep it.

It's a good ride; a little under powered at times, especially when getting on the free-way, but once you get up to speed, you can pass easily. It's just the initial get up and go. And to me, that is to be expected when you have an SUV that is made for torque and hauling, not speed and racing.

It was always big enough for us to take what and who we needed, to the places we needed to go.

Overall it's a pretty good buy (tranny went on me @ 171,000, almost exactly.)

Faults:

Water leak between firewall and drivers side valve cover area. Was told the 1993 Explorer intake manifold deserved one more bolt on the intake end where it meets head and block.

AC never worked since it was bought, was told it would cost 600.00 to upgrade it.

General Comments:

The SUV seems to be a nice vehicle, but would dread having to do some heavy engine work on the EFI model.

The height of the vehicle is right at the point it makes it difficult to work on. Sure wish Ford gave a little more room around the engine compartment to work on stuff too.

Faults:

I have had no problems with this vehicle except a knocking noise when I am close to a building or wall.

The seat control on the drivers side was broken off the seat when I bought it. Some paint damage on the hood seems to be from frequent wax treatments (rubbed off). The remote key entry has a broken key loop, it was $110 to replace. I glued it to a metal key fob for $5.00. I replaced all the fluids when I bought it, the recommended oil was 5-30W, I put in 10-40W "extended mileage" type oil.

General Comments:

I bought this truck from a divorced lady that was selling it for her ex-husband who was in jail and needed money, for $2000. I am third owner, the original owner seems to have taken very good care of it. I love it, I drove it from Modesto, CA to Yuma, AZ then to Canby, OR (near Portland), then back to Modesto, then to Yuma, where I now live. That is about 3200 miles with no problems (knock on wood).

I plan to keep it for a while, but, the knocking sound bothers me. I guess it will run as long as I keep up with regular fluid changes. The windows do not always go up when I want, but, I can deal with that. There is some "TLC" to be done. I love this truck!
