1993 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V6

Summary:

A superb and versatile vehicle for a family of 4 on the go

Faults:

The voltage regulator full fielded the alternator and the battery exploded, one week after we had the truck.

The clutch master cylinder started leaking at around 125000 miles.

The clutch slave cylinder split at 148000 miles. Replaced the clutch disc and pressure plate at that time as well.

The radius arm bushings make a thumping noise. But considering the mileage, this does not bother me, and is easily repaired.

General Comments:

This vehicle was purchased with very high miles and therefore I expected it to be a money pit.

This surprisingly has not been the case at all.

Short of a normal wear and tear, there have been few major problems with the vehicle.

In fact, I am planning on having the engine rebuilt or replaced because I like the vehicle so well.

Thanks for your comments on the Ford Explorer 1993 - I am thinking of purchasing one that has 150,000 km on the engine, 324,000 on the vehicle. The asking price is 3,000.00, so from what I have been reading it is well worth it. There is a little bit of surface rust around the wheel wells and inside the doors, but this is Canada, and salt on the roads all winter cause this damage I am sure. I took it for a test drive, and found it really has a lot of guts. Any comments? Anything else I should watch for? Bye for now. Nancy.

1993 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0

Summary:

A pain in the butt

Faults:

Everything but the engine.

I need some help, when it rains the truck will not start, if I go a distance of 1.5 miles and cut the truck off, and 5 seconds later try to start it up, it still won't work.

Ford looked at my truck for 3 days, and they don't even know what's wrong with it.

General Comments:

Originally the truck was great, after 100,000 miles the truck fell apart.

Odds are there is an electrical problem leading to malfunctioning ignition. That or you may need a new ignition. Just check over the wires and see if they have corroded at all, if you live near the ocean or near a salty, sandy area then you should check with some regularity. Salt with all of its uses, really beats the hell out of any car, new or old.

Agreed. Mine fell apart too. First the windows, then the doors wouldn't open. Then all the seals in the engine broke (about a $3000 job). The final straw was when the electrical system burned out and almost caught my car on fire! Please, to anyone considering buy a 1993 Ford Exploder, simply just don't do it. Thank you.

1993 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V6

Summary:

A high maintenance buckboard

Faults:

I have always had problems with this car. I have replaced the four wheel drive transfer case and the front bearings 3 times. The dealership packed the bearings wrong and the electric transfer case malfunctioned.

The starter was replaced once.

I have also replaced the heating and air conditioning thermostat 3 times. If the temperature is below zero the heater only blows slightly warm air.

Rust is appearing around the wheel hubs and the plastic on the interior of the front doors is cracking.

General Comments:

It delivers a horrible ride and rocks from side to side when pulling out of traffic lights and stop signs.

The sound system is very good.

I would advise an interested buyer to look elsewhere when shopping for a SUV.
